I dunno... show respect, I guess.
it's the judge's courtroom, so had better show some respect I guess.
yeah it makes me angry too... cause pretty much, you wouldn't be in court if you weren't fucked over in the first place... so showing respect to the guy who is gonna fuck you over more just rubs me the wrong way, you know?

respect and tradition. You are rising not for the man, but for what he represents.

ROFL, ain't that the truth.
its like why did that officer just kick my ass? well you probably had it coming. Sure there have been unprovoked ass kickings before, but 99% are valid.

Yeah the "all rise" is for show of respect for the law and the country. The Judge is supposed to be the ultimate representation of the law so we are rising for the law being "displayed" through His Honor.
On a seperate note. I've been to court more times than I would like to admit, but 2 years ago I finally got a Judge that explained his job. He was kind of a dick about it, but when he was done with his lecture I actually was thankful. IMO Judges usually don't give a damn about what you think of their decision they just tell you how it is. This guy was a prick but he at least explained himself. he went on by saying....
"Please don't try and explain yourself to me. I'm not here to bargin with you. If you wanted to bargin then the Prosecutor is the man to do it with. My job is to intepret the law and decide if you are gulity or not. You telling me your "story" means nothing. A dramatic example is if you tell me your license is suspended and your were caught driving because you had to take your Mom to the hospital then you are admiting your guilt and you're GUILTY. That's it, you were driving without your license. I'm sure that makes you a saint but in this court you broke the law. Now if you want compassion then you should have told that story to the Prosecutor, in this example he clearly would have let it go. But the example still remains, I can only say guilty or not guilty.....that's it.
Like I said, the guy was kind of a prick....but he was an honest prick

You rise for the judge to show respect.
Whether or not you like it he does hold at least part of your future in his hands. That part may be the next 20 years or it may just determine how you spend that $200 in your wallet (fines vs titty bar).
Whatever the case is, he worked hard to get to where he is and honestly in my opinion that deserves respect. Your future is in this man or womans hands try not to go out of your way to piss them off.

If you think about it, people tend to rise for anyone they respect, especially when they enter a room. I know that when i meet new people or when i see people of higher power than me, i rise if seated, even if it's just to shake there hand....still shows respect i guess.
