Personett sets new Pro RWD record (6.45)
First pass at the US Nationals today:
Quote:
Brad Personett set a new Pro RWD national record Saturday at the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, running a 6.49 at 217.21 mph on his second qualifying attempt in the Titan Motorsports Scion tC to back up his earlier 6.45. The new record of 6.45 broke the 6.47 mark he set in Topeka, Kan., in May. The Pro RWD competition comprises one of the class’ 11 races counting towards the series championship. Personett, a former Division 3 Top Sportsman racer from nearly Elkhart, Ind., now living in Orlando, Fla., won last year’s U.S. Nationals title.
Personett’s teammate, Gary Lee White, in the Titan Celica, who entered the event hot of his first career win at Moroso Motorsports Park two weeks ago, clocked a 6.62 at 208.30 for the No. 2 spot in the first session, then ran a 6.72, 207.02 in the afternoon.
Last year’s runner-up Matt Scranton, comes to Indy with a brand-new, minimally tested RJ Racecars-built Toyota Solara after bending up his number one Ride Revolution Toyota in the final round at Moroso. Scranton was uninjured in the shunt thanks to some deft driving that avoided a head-on encounter with the guardwall after his car got well sideways. Scranton slid into the third spot with a 6.76, 208.42, recorded on his first pass, then got loose on his second pass and aborted the run to a 9.54 clocking.
The final car on the sheets is Manny Cruz, whose Bronx Terror Squad Mercury Cougar hesitated at the hit and then motored through to an 8.53, 166.38 on his first pass then improved slightly to an 8.12 on his second effort.
All four cars will get two more qualifying passes Sunday and then run eliminations Monday.
