No Vtec

So I just finished up my break in period for my new clutch, and I hadnt gone into vtec for the full 500 miles. Today when the break in period was up, I floored it and to my dismay, no vtec . If anyone could shine there knowledge of why this might be happening my way I would greatly appreciate it.

defenately make sure you have enough oil and pressure. are you fully warmed up? also make sure the coolant temp sensors are working correctly. if theyre not, you wont have vtec.

check your oil. Vtec is oil pressure based and if your oil gets low, there wont be enough oil pressure hence you not having vtec.

heres kind of a stupid question...is your speedometer working? if its not, then theres a problem with the vehicle speed sensor. if your vss isnt working, vtec will not engage because it doesent think the car is moving. thats the same reason you cant hit vtec in neutral.

I checked the oil about a week ago and it was topped off, but I'll check it again tomorrow. I just got home from work and im too tired to go back outside lol. And the speedo is working so the vss shouldnt be the problem although ill look into that if the oil isnt the problem. Thanks to everyone for the help.

Ok my car is retarded. I got in my car to go home this morning, and I noticed the oil temp gauge was not working, then I looked over and niether was my speedo. WTF! So I looked in my chiltons manual to figure out exactly where the vss was, and all it does is explain how to unhook it, and not where it is. Anyways I'm wondering for anyone who has downloaded chapter 11 of the free helms manual that Blake has posted can tell me if there is a diagram for the vss because it would take all day for my comp to download. Or if anyone knows where it is off the top of there head.

to find the vss, you should look near your shift linkage on your tranny. there should be a relatively large plug on it with wires connected to it. i think its held in with like 2 10mm bolts or something. youll know when you have it out cause it looks like an older distributor when its out cause it has a long shaft with a gear on it that that goes about 4 inches own into the trans.

here is one angle of the vss out of the tranny.

and here is a close up of the wire connector

another way you can tell where it is, is to find the 2 hose lines that come off of it.

Well thanks for the help, but I got in my car to go to work and both the speedo and the oil temp started magically working again, but still no vtec.

maybe something is shorting out, or grounding out. if you speed and your oil temp just stop working it MIGHT be a ground or something and maybe your signal isn't getting sent to the VTEC solenoid therefor no VTEC for you.

does the Solenoid click when you send power to it?

it might click for him but that doesent mean that it works right. if it was bad, hed probably have a cel tho. mine is bad so i have no vtec. with a dvom on the solenoid wire, youre supposed to have 14-30 ohms of resistance. i only had like 7, so the flowchart told me to replace the solenoid. i havnt gotten around to it tho, i need to wait for my next paycheck. but i hooked up a wier to my battery + cable and ran it to the solenoid, and it clicked...only because i sent 12 volts through it tho. i think it runs off of 5 volts like most other sensors and solenoids in the electrical system.

just hook up a wire to the positive battery terminal and unplug the connector for the vtec soleniod. then attatch the other end of the wire from the battery to the actual solenoid itself and listen to see if it clicks. but it doesent erally matter if it does because mine clicks but its still bad. if it doesent click, then you know for sure you have a problem. but it would be almost impossible for it not to click. nothing inside can really go wrong. i just have some kind of weird event that mine went bad. they usually dont.

John I though your wasn't activating becuase of the CEL and the ECU wasn't recieving voltage or something? did you get your all fixed?

any as no to hijack the thread with that yeah I didn't think VTEC soleniod went bad they are pretty basic device

Did VTEC work BEFORE the clutch went in?
Have you changed anything BEFORE the last time you hit VTEC and the clutch went in?
Change anything AFTER the clutch went in but BEFORE 500 miles?
you know what... if you changed your clutch and your speedo and oil temp guage went out magically did you make sure your tranny is grounded properly again? VSS is in the tranny and you need that signal to be clear for VTEC to engage... maybe when you were changing the clutch something got knocked out or loose?
