Do coolant temp. sensor resistor modifiers work?
Hi folks,
I was on E-Bay yesterday and saw that there are at least 4 companies/individuals that offer some sort of interface box that modifies the coolant temp. sensor's resistance and "fools" the computer. Thus, the car runs richer.
These boxes claim a h.p. increase of anywhere between 5 h.p. and a rediculous claim of 35 h.p.
Do they even work at all, except to possibly lower your m.p.g?

stay away from them. Its junk stuff that claim hp but give you nothing. and why would you wanna fool your ecu into a false reading?? then how would you know if something is wrong? Why do you wanna run rich if your motor isnt meant for it. youll go through plugs quicker and cause other damage.
Your ecu thinks your running cool but your engine is running extremely hot and possibly overheating but guess what??? YOU WONT KNOW IT cuz of this crap. stay away from it. Its garbage.

I'm not sure what you're getting at, yo need to be more clear. Are you saying that they will NOT provide the additional 35-40 h.p. that some of them claim?
Seriously, thanks for confirming what I suspected.
I was looking at getting a chip, but I saw some of them eliminate the knock sensor function, and I sure wouldn't want to do that. I wonder if they all do?
Thanks again.

Ranger

They will provide you with the a hp increase but at great risk of going boom.
Stay away from pre-programed chips as well. You have to realize that these chips are not made for your set up. They are made with a different set up. The best "chips" are the ones burned specifically for you and the conditions around you not some generic shit thats out there that they wanna sell. You might get lucky and get a well tuned chip that is close to what you have and you may benefit from it but then again you could get one that is far from what you have and cause you damage. As far as the knock sensor goes it all depends on who programmed the chip. Its a choice they make and not all of them are the same so some may eliminate the knock sensor and some dont.

Thanks again for your input.
Of course, a custom-burned chip can't be beat, as it can take into acccount all the factors endemic to one's particular vehicle, any modifcations that have been done to the motor/trans, altitude, etc.
I figure I can't go wrong with a cold-air kit, though. They seem to give a few more ponies, and sometimes more m.p.g.
Again, on E-Bay there were several names from which to choose. I'm sure some use a better filter than otheres, for example.
As I'm new to Hondas, are they any "good" names for cold-air kits. Obviously, a K and N filter is probably about the best filter, but I'm talking about the company that makes the pipe that goes with it.
Thanks again.

as far as the cold air kits its a toss up. alot of people will tell you to go with aem stuff and some say to just get the right diameter piping and slap an K&N filter on it. I would have told you to go with a comptech icebox but comptech closed its doors up. best bet would be to go with the ebay tubes and go with a k&n filter. if you arent looking to spend alot of money. there are a few companies like ractive but they arent that good. NOPI.com you can search that for companies that make the cold air intakes for your car.

Thanks again for your valuable input.
I see there is at least one company that makes a header for my car. I already run a gutted cat, and will be adding a performance muffler soon. Would it be worth the expense to add the header to an otherwise stock engine, or are we talking only 5 h.p. or so?
thanks again,

Its always worth it just depends on how much you are looking to spend. If you do get a header just make sure that the collecter diameter matches the rest of the exhaust pipe. ie 2.25-2.25" that way you have a free flowing exhaust to get the most out of it. look at the an-r headers those are good. other than that a dc header is ok
