problem with smoking.

ok guys, as far as oil goes, i dont burn too much. i may have to add a half quart between changes but thats not bad for an h22. when im just driving, there is no smoke. but when i floor it, there isnt smoke either...till i hit vtec. i never really noticed it till tonight. a buddy of mine was behind me one day and said my car smokes a bit. no big deal. i had some guy on my ass tonight with his highbeams on honking his horn and all. well...i was following some guy in front of me so there wasnt too much i could do. we had a doubble yellow so i couldnt pass, whatever. i passed anyway. i downshifted to third and gave a look behine me as vtec cracked and it looked like a really foggy night out from the smoke. i guess it looks worse at night with the lights then in the day. in the day, i can see it. its not blue so its not oil burning. its black. so seems like fuel. i have the normal bolt ons plus a p28 from phearable with a prelude basemap. could this be why its happening? i know these engines rin a tad rich from the factory, but shouldnt burn gas like that. do i just need a tune or what? i dont know what to do. thanks in advance guys.

no, no smoke at idle, or funny not so normal smells coming from the exhaust. the ONLY time it happens is when i hit vtec...and its only for that first initial crack when vtec engages. it doesent continue through vtec, only when it engeges for a sec.

I'm pretty sure all H22s are this way from the factory. They are notorious for running rich in VTEC. Honda tuned them that way for peace of mind that the engine won't detonate when in VTEC.

I don't think that is why, when in VTEC the engine is less prone to detonation because there is more valve over lap which in turn will have a small EGR effect in the cylinders, that little bit of gas that gets sucked back into the cylinders cannot be bruned and in turn helps keep cylinder temperatures down. Just like an EGR valve does.

Yeah but still, i'd get a wideband and either tune it yourself or get somebody to do it for you. Should fix the problem.
