sucking in water!!!
ok guys, i have a pretty bad problem here. i had a cold air intake inside the fender. well that was a bad idea cause i was sucking up a little bit of water. no big deal, i figured id cut the intake and make it fit under the hood. well that worked perfectly. i cut it right, and it fit right. i did a better job customizing it to fit then some manufacturers produce them to fit. well...i still suck up water. i have no idea what to do! i need some help here. anyone else have this problem? i ben trying to think of a way to make a custom box (that will fit where i need it), to protect the filter from water, and yet not restrict too much airflow but i cant think of anything i can rig up. i even tried taking the short 90 degree angle piece of intake pipe and putting it on my throttle body and on the other end, the filter. it still seems to suck up a little bit of water somehow.
after i drive in the rain, ill look over by the battery where the filter sits, and itll be drenched! i cant figure that out either. i have the plastic inside the fender well. its old so its not flawless, but i dont see that letting that much water through. is there something else that im missing? is there supposed to be more in there then just the inner fender shroud? im having a hell of a time with this thing with the wether weve ben having here in jersey lately. i hope someone can help me, and thanks in advance guys

bypass valve my friend. and if youre cold air intake was sucking up water your engine would have hydrolocked already. water is getting under the hood someway else. if i were you ide get rid of the cold air and get a short ram or a comptech ice box.

i modified the one in the fender to sit under the hood, so its not really a cold air intake. but i can tell when i run through a puddle or something, even when im on the clutch so its in neutral, the engine runs really rough. its not like it misfires or anything, so its not that. i thought maybe the wires were getting wet or something. but you can hear that it sounds different in an unhealthy way. i know im not sucking in enough water to hydrolock the engine, but even a little bit of water (enough to make the engine run like it does when i go through pudles) its not a good thing.

If the filter head is in the fender is it lower part or upper? do you still have the splash gaurds under the bumper to keep water from comming up splashing? like i said i would change the intake. and by the way if you are getting even a lil water in it its enough to blow your engine eventually. remember water cannot be compressed so something will give.

i made it a short ram intake, so now its not in the fender. its ben like that wor a month or so now, and still getting wet. i only have the inner fender liner, not the under belly guard, i dont know if that makes a difference or not, but alot of cars dont have em. i had it up on the lift at work today and tried to take another look to see what was going on, but couldnt see anything obvious.

I thought if you sucked up a lil water you'd just burn it out only deep puddles really can hydrolock you

You are correct, but he is right when he says liquids cannot be compressed.
If your filter is just getting wet its not that big of deal.

Actuallyl i sucked up a lil water and my engine stalled up for a hot min. we pushed the car and "popped the clutch" and got it started. few days later my engine blew up. i snapped a piston rod in half. it doesnt take a lot of water in your engine to hydrolock you. if he had water in the engine the engine would shut off and not wanna start for a while.
