CRX Bass tubes (replicas)
Well I found a guy on Honda-Tech who has started manufacturing replica JDM CRX Bass tubes!! This is an extremely hard to find OEM option and it really helps out sound quality in the CRXs rear speakers.
Product website... http://web.mac.com/bun_stylz/iWeb/tubes/Welcome.html
So here's the deal, the rear speakers in the CRX literally just screw into the rear interior trim pieces. There was no attempt on the part of Honda to create an enclosure of any type. As we know speakers without an enclosure loose all of their efficiency and sound so-so. Most modern cars today have enclosures molded into the interior trim this helps a lot and is part of the reason today's sounds systems sound better (even if marginally).
The base tubes correct this issue. Basically you unscrew the rear 6.5" speakers and where they were you insert these long tubes. The tubes are fiberglass and the tuck all the way back into the interior panels to form a nice enclosure, they're even ported. Once in place the speaker in then screwed into the tube itself. Now please, this is not gonna give you mirror shaking bass. As a matter of fact calling them "bass" tubes might even be a stretch. Let's just say it will give the sound more depth, low notes will be more defined, but it WILL NOT thump. Obviously to get pure bass a sub-woofer will need to be installed along with a proper amp.
Anyway, here are some photos.
At first glance I am not overly impressed with the craftsmanship of these units. However because they are tucked away out of sight I am willing to forgive their appearance. All I really care about is the acoustics and because they were molded directly off a set of OEM bass tubes I am sure they will sound great.
In just a little while I will post up my installation and impression of the sound quality. Check back soon!!!

Cool I would like to see a really clear shot of what they look like in the car. I will order them shortly.

workmanship seems off at first glance but remember they are hand made over the oem ones. i say if it works function over form. plus like john said you can forgive it since they are hidden anyway.

OK.....first some pictures. These install really easy but I think some people still can't imagine how they go in the car.
Now for the sound.......
They sound good Exactly what I was expecting, nothing crazy just plain good. In other words they bring the sound quality in the rear up to what a modern day Honda would sound like.
Do you need these if you don't give a damn about your stereo?? .... Probably not. However, if your building a quality audio system for the REX they are a must.
I will say I'm glad I didn't spend the 350+ for the OEM ones. At 140- shipped they are a bit over priced but fair considering they are basically hand crafted low production units.
I'm sure what my setup is now lacking is a nice amp and a small 8" sub. With more power I think the bass tubes would shine more. Head units really provide basic power output at best and I wasn't expecting anything more than I got.

considering they cost over 300 for the oem ones these at 140 shipped seems like a fair to good deal. you got them for quality and sound not look. its the look of them that makes you feel you might have over paid a lil. and the fact that you dont have an amp for the speakers to really shine with once you toss in the amp and instead of an 8inch sub ide go with one ten inch solo baric l7 speaker. (square kicker) those things rock. and with good highs you have a great sound system with great quality.

Looks good man. I have somewhat started my sound system setup and this would be a great addition. Thanks for sharing your find.

john if you want SQ in your audio system i would definately go with an 8" sub. possibly from JL audio. build yourself a nice fiberglass box for the corner of the hatch area, and a hidden amp rack on the other side of the hatch to power the sub. components i can see you getting MB Quarts or even focal. very nice sounding speakers. even boston acoustics are very nice choice! let me know whats going on!

for a sub i would still go with the solobaric L7 square sub. that thing packs a mean but crisp punch.
