back in the mid to late 90's, drivers in japan used to do it for the fronts and fronts only. they noticed it helped decrease the sidewall flex with the tyre under load.....
that 'mushy' feeling. it makes steering less direct and stretching tyres was a great trade-off for the decreased amount of 'traction' u get from the tyres not wallowing over. alot of street tyres nowadays have well built monoblock sidewalls, but it helps regardless
it also aided in wheel fitment. cos well....'stance' is everything. there was this trend once called....'demon camber' if u translated it. NOB taniguchi actually wrote off one of his hachi-roku's because of it lol
suspension when it moves doesnt just go up and down
it moves up and IN
so having super tough fitment of rims was achieved thru awesomely low offsets (that also aided in scrub radius for turning) and stretching the tyres
the stretched walls arent vertical as u know. they are at an angle
a good way to see if the sidewall is well structured or not is when u look at the sidewall, u can see whether the wall is still straight but just at an angle
or if it "rounds out". rounding out is a tell-tale sign that the tyre itself doesnt have much sidewall reinforcement/construction.
anyhooooooo, the angled sidewalls let the wheel move up and in and clear the fender. hence u only needed mm of clearance. it gives it that stance which is hard to achieve. so ppl take their pride in it
steering feels direct at a tiny trade off of traction
over the years drifting became also about individuality
style.
hence why drift cars are alot 'different' lookin compared to race builds. they also have a trend that follows almost like fashion and seasons.
for low power sliders, ppl also noticed because of the stretched sidewalls and the lack of tyre 'roll-over' also helped in the rear to upset traction from grip to slip
AND have gangsta wide/supercool/superawesometown rims at the same time
PLUS gangsta fitment
so it went to the rears as well....lots of variations. lots of individuals doin their own thing....and there u have it. the concept of stretch and hella flush
so runnin 9 front and 10 rear is a common combination we all use. we dont care much for weight....our cars put down well enough power. so its done for a flash of style. plus u can show off gangsta wheel fitment.
