2 more rexs
Hi guys, I found this forum through a mention on another forum about a b18a1 swap. I have an 88 CRX HF (white) and a 90 CRX HF(red). The white one is my dd. The red one has sadly become a parts car (warped head?), although I do drive it from one side of the street to the other occasionally (liquid head gasket repair). I have a 4-2-1 stainless header, and ansa exhaust on the 88. Thats about where my modifications end. I've always loved hondas, my first car was a red Bordeaux pearl 94 accord coupe ex-l 4 cyl v-tec. Sometimes I dream about doing a rear-engine h22 setup in a rex, but its just dream. I'm more interested in fuel efficiency at the moment. I have a supermid m1 fuel mileage computer... and I've gotten up to 72 mpg in a 10mi run in my little rex... and although its not often repeatable... given more time and resource. It certainly could be.

Welcome to TJ! I'm probably going to migrate my swap howto onto my own server or onto TJ directly. If you have any questions, this is definitely the place to ask. Also, unlike most other forums, you're allowed to mention other forums. The only reason TJ exists is because it's the best of the breed.

What is your gas mileage like overall? The best i've managed so far in my HF is 46 mpg over a full tank. Not terrible but i'd really like to improve it because I know there are a few things that can be done to improve that.

Ill call BS on the 72mpg. My 650cc motorcycle only gets about 45mpg.
A Vespa scooter doesnt even get 70mpg. Theres no way a vehicle that weighs 10x more with an engine thats about 16x larger could possibly get better gas mileage.

"Well, Kenyon, the Hondas of the mid-to-late 80s weren't saddled with the weight of dual airbags, anti-intrusion door beams, etc. The highest-MPG Honda was the two-seat CRX HF. In 1989 it had a 62 HP engine, manual transmission only, needed 12 secs to go 0-60, and EPA estimates were 49 MPG city/52 MPG highway. The 4-door Civic sedan for that year had a more useable 92 hp and room for four; its EPA estimates were 31 city/34 highway."
What ever happened to the 50 MPG Honda?
i've heard of a lot of people getting around 60 with a lot of highway driving, even with city driving better mpg than a bike, but we would have to go into cam profiles and into over lap and all that mess to get to why your small engine only gets 45mpg

Plus, you have to take into consideration aerodynamics and coefficient of drags which are much higher on a motorcycle than a CRX.
