new to acura need advice

ok, i need advice, i got a 91 canadian integra (everythings in kg and km) it has headers and i'm looking into a cai kit, what else would be good to improve its street performance, i want to go ls vtec but i'm only 16 and have limited funds now becaus i baught, i also don't know that much about honda motors, i know more than the average person but i don't know specifics, i used to work on chevy. what would be something i could do that would increase my hp and torque. to say maybe beat a mildly upgraded 94 integra gsr (headers, chip, short shift) in a race help would be greatly apreaciated thanks.

In my experience, most stockish (bolt on) GSR's run 15's. My brother ran 15.7 with his with only exhaust and it would or went at least mid 15's with some better driving. I'm not sure how much it'd take for a DA to run in that area, but i know it's not a lot.

As far as intake, i'd probably just go with one off of ebay. Replace the filter with a K&N and you're set. I'm not sold on AEM's being all that great but i've never done back to back testing so i can't say for sure.

My advice is either to start looking towards a turbo setup down the line (the B18A is pretty strong for boost, can easily do 250whp on the stock motor). The money you'd spend doing LS/VTEC would be a decent amount towards it, especially if you pieced together your own kit.

One other thing i'd say is to go to the track and start getting some seat time. Everyone thinks they can drive until they go to the track and they cut a 2.4 60' (which almost everyone does). It doesn't matter if your car runs 16's, seat time is seat time.

Welcome!!

I would also go the ebay route for a CAI. Then if your looking to just "improve street performance" I would look into the old header / exhaust option. Moving on from there will be leave you with big decisions (and big money spending). You'll have to answer the famous turbo/supercharger/NA question.

before spending the money on a intake and header I would do a little research to make sure that lsvtec is within your budget. doing an lsvtec can end up being very pricey. you could easily piece together a turbo kit for about the same or even less than it would cast to go vtec.

but the reason I say to hold off on intake and header is because if you do decide to go turbo you wont be using the intake and the header. so that will be money that you couldve spent elsewhere in your build.

if you have any more questions, please ask away. and welcome to TJ

what they said. decide what you wanna do then you can ask that question again. In the meantime check your exhaust piping for any dents and things like that that will disrupt air flow. do a full tuneup. youde be surprised how much power you can get back after doing routine maint. Make sure nothing is dented, or leaking. Ebay intake and a k&n filter is cheap and you can always sell later if you want a lil giddy up for now. stay away from cai for now until you decide what you wanna do honestly. LEARN TO DRIVE. surprisingly you can beat a faster car even if you drive a slower car if you know how to drive it. Ive beaten faster cars before just because i could outdrive the other guy. (not saying im a great driver, no track time)

ok i looked into it, i want to save for a b18c5 but the least expensive swap i could find was around $5k, and thats alot for a video store clerk is there any other place on the net that sells swaps for cheaper, i forgot to mention earlier i have a 91 GS with a stock b18a it has a stage 2 clutch, headers, and a short ram but the car has around 350k kilometers on it, whatever that amounts to in miles, i am thinking about ordering a cai off of ebay but i cant seem to find a aem air valve or whatever they are called because i live in idaho, where it likes to rain alot every now and then but it stayes relativly cold, so i think the benifits of a cai would outway the hassle if i had a safety.

Obd issues will make swapping in a C5 more difficult than it is expensive. I would personally look into a obd1 b16a. A longblock can be found for under $1300. As long as the filter doesn't hang way low in your bumper and you reinstall the splash guards, you won't have any problems. Also, just look ahead of yourself when driving so as not to go through deep standing water.

Forget about the b18c5 its a great engine but over rated as far as swapping goes. You can get a b18c (gs-r) and mod it to be what the type r is for less money. For the same five g's you can get the gsr mod it to be faster than the itr. and if youre gonna mod the type r motor anyway whats the point of spending 5g's on a stock motor? just to say its itr? go with the gsr youll have more money towards the work and mods afterwards and you wont regret it. I have a gsr right now sitting in a civic pushing over 200+whp. once the civic is done its gonna be a sleeping monster.

ITR engine is not worth it unless you are gonna leave it alone 100%. However, in the real world this is usually not the case and as soon as you mess with it then you wasted your money. You could easily buy as mentioned a GSR engine and then mod that. Trust me, I bought a ITR engine, paid a ton on the swap, drove it 5000 miles and now the engine is torn down and has basically nothing in it that's ITR. The only thing that's ITR is my valve cover!!

List of ITR parts that are no longer on my engine.....

Crank
Pistons
rods
flywheel / clutch
block (at least the bore)
valves / springs / retainers
intake cam
cam gears
oil pump
dizzy
intake manifold
throttle body (has been totally modified)
fuel rail / injectors
header (I had both styles and they're both gone)

having the itr stamp on your block gives you the bling factor. but in reality, its over rated

hmm...this thread's about a year old, but I'll bump it anyhow...I'm coming along the same line of questioning, just bought a 1990 integra GS (same as the 91 as far as i know) and am considering phoning the local scrapyards and finding an engine to work on. **IF** i'm reading his right, it says I can get about 250ish hp out of this engin relativly safely without the hassle of swapping in a new engin? Because I'm new to being a mechanic and that'd be cool

nice.....VERY nice.
lol...it's even the same color as mine, but I like the headlight swap and rims, subtle but effective. Not so sure about the carbon-fiber style trim in the rear, but that's just me.

these pictures are about 3 months old, since then ive changed the headlights back to the usdm 3pieces, as for the vinyl, that rear panel was smashed in when i got the car and i used the one off the old 91 canadian car but it was rattlecaned primer and i didnt hav the funds to paint it at the time so i put a cf vinyl on it instead of an ugly black/gray primer, the gas door was just extra leftover

i would but i traded a kid for the stockies, i origionaly traded my stock lights for one of these: eBay Motors: 90-93 Acura Integra Spider fiberglass 4pc BODY KIT 2dr (item 130261230776 end time Oct-14-08 13:34:10 PDT) but i didnt realy like the look, the back bumper is moddified but not finnished, it was raised a little and refiberglassed but never smoothed and one of the sideskirts is cut to fit better but idk, like i said i didnt realy feel for it once i had it on. but anyway, yeah i traded the halos for another set of stockies. you can find them on ebay for like $80 new
