I had a 1971 Super Beetle (fist year of the Super). I dropped the engine out and put in a 1975 dual port engine. Instead of super slow as shit, I made it slow as shit I was going to drop mad money on it but I was 21 and broke

I know for a fact your not going to turbo charge that car easily. Your also not going to water cool it easily either. Your best bet is to get a used Porsche 914 engine, or early 911 six. The 914 engine is a direct bolt in and the Porsche engine can be massaged it. Either way you will spend bucks, but they are cool projects!! The 911 engine can be worked to easily get around 200 whp N/A. Put that in a 1700lbs beetle and look out!!

A dual port engine is deffinitley the way to go, i had one. A very important thing to do is port the heads and mill them add a good cam and some underdrive pulleys and youll be able to pull a wheely from dead stop no bs.

Honestly the best "go fast" thing you get will be a transmission. we had a 56 oval window, (1 of 19 total that we restored) and we dropped a 1776 dual port motor in, used a 110 cam, high comp pistons and qual 44mm delorto carbs. the kicker was the rancho pro street transmission, high 12 second car....laughing at vetts in a 56 beetle was fun.
