DIY: Painting valve cover

ok peeps, ill post this up because i recently did this myself...and im the bomb.

STEPS:

1.Purchase the following supplies:

valve cover gasket/sealant
Degreaser of some kind/aircraft stripper
duplicover primer (high temp)
duplicolor base coat (high temp)
duplicolor clear (high temp)
masking tape
fine grain sandpaper

2.Remove the valve cover by extracting the 12 overall bolts, then remove the oil cap and put fingers inside the valve cover, pull up in an even way to remove the cover as a whole. extract the old gasket for the valve cover, peel away any excess sealing caulk that was used in applying the gasket.

^^^this is what your old POS cover looks like..boo!!!

3. Using the degreaser/stripper wipe entire surface to be painted down with the degreaser and use terry clothes to wipe clean, make sure no oil or grease is left behind!!! Rinse the valve cover of with soap and water, scrub clean and dry off.

^^^this isnt my vlave cover obviously, but the pictures of the degreasing were deleted...this is a rough idea of what it will look like after degreaing process

4. Using fine grain sandpaper, sand down imperfections in the original finish and create a smooth base for the paint to be applied. Rinse with soap and water when step is complete.

^^^this is in the middle of the sanding process, more work is needed to rid of any and all imperfections, you might want to look into sandblasting for a quality finish!

5. mask off any and all areas you wish not to be painted...(spark plug holes, oil cap threads etc etc)

6. Using the high temp primer, apply one light coat to the valve cover, make sure the first coat is light! wait 10-15 min and apply a second light coat. wait another 15 min and apply a medium coat. WARNING: overspray and heavy coats will cause runs in the paint! be very restrictive on amounts of paint/primer used!

7. If necessary, resand any imperfections and repeat step 6 before moving onto step 8.

8. apply the color paint you like to the primered coat after waiting 45 min (approx) apply one light coat to the valve cover, make sure the first coat is light! wait 10-15 min and apply a second light coat. wait another 15 min and apply a medium coat. WARNING: overspray and heavy coats will cause runs in the paint! be very restrictive on amounts of paint used!

9. finally, wait about another 35-45min and lay down 2 layers of clear, evenly and nicely layed to stop runs in the clear

10. let the valve cover dry for abnout 3 hours before reinstalling

11. Sand down vtec DOHC or whatever you want to reveal a silver lettering.
WARNINGS AND PITFALLS

-light coats make nice work, no runny paint.
-do not over torque bolts on valve cover, they will strip out
-this is not a definite guide, im not responsible for your BS work
