they arent great, but are ok for basic bolt on motors. Its really easy to learn how to use. If you get a wideband, thats about all you need to tune the car with. Leave vtec crossover at the stock placement and tune the motor to 13:1 - :13:3 at WOT. I'm not a fan of them tho.

i was considering going with an obd1 jumper and a chipped p28 ecu, but that in the end would run me around 250-275 bucks from vega, so i picked this thing up instead, can i tune for a simple boost amount on this? im thinkinmg of running 8 or so psi, making around 230-250 depending.

honestly for boost i would go with a real engine management. hondata s200 = 275 p28 = 100 jumper harness = 100.
Personal opinion you are better off spending the extra money. Also upgrade your injectors and fuel pump while you are at it. along with the fuel pressure regulator and fuel rail. Since you are boosting.

yeah as far as engine managment goes, i know to upgrade the fuel system, obviously, however, i cant use the VAFC for boost tuning?

boost tunning with a vafc is not a very good idea. Its not a real tuning device. When you use a vafc you arent really tuning but more like playing with a sensor.

its a device for disaster on boosted motors. You cannot independently control the timing whatsoever. With tuning boost, you want to retard the timing .75*-1.25* per pound of boost depending on what your build is and how much boost you are going to run. Ignition adjustments are only side effects of tuning with a vafc. Fuel is not the major killer of boosted motors. Its motors that have untuned ignition maps that eventually blow up.

The V-AFC plays on your Map sensor voltage to "tune"(for lack of better term) your car, now while it IS possiable to use it on a boosted motor you have to use a method known as the V-AFC hack. This consist of you buying increable oversized injectors and basically pulling a SHITLOAD of fuel out with the V-AFC across the board, this of course pulls a crapload of timing which as explained above is a very bad thing.
Also with boosted motors using the V-AFC hack it is possable for an OBD2 computer to de "tune" the modifications and this will blow your engine right quick. Other problems with this method include a CEL that WILL throw you into perm open loop mode which is a bad thing, a possiable Low voltage from Map sensor or a HIgh voltage from map sensor code which will throw off any type of "tune" you might have made. RUnning increable rich becuase of the sheer bad design of these things and leaning out up top.
Also note that the tunes made in the V-AFC ONLY affect OPEN LOOP or WOT if you are driving along and your turbo is spool even 3 PSI and your not petal to the metal or have a device to throw the car into OPEN LOOP when boost is present your running more then likely REALLY lean which can cause engine damage.
when its all said and done proper engine management like the Hondata S200 will work 10 time better and probably cost a lot less then making a V-AFC set up work even halfway decent.
But it IS better then a RRFPR I'll give you that ROFL.

very good writeup, thanks a bunch!
can i run a VAFC and hondata? just to see my revs and throttle? or will the systems collide and get pissy

if you put the V-AFC to 0% accross the board then it is no more then a fancy looking guage, some people worry about voltage drop becuase your are still intercepting the signals but if you change nothing then you should be fine.
But there are better devices for viewing these things if you need that information.
