Good platforms for drifting

Ive always wondered this. Some are obvious but id like to hear from the east run peeps and see what platforms are good for drifting and which arent.

You mean like different makes and models of cars ideal for sliding? Or the first things you should mod to an FR car to make it drift ready? Or both? hehe

Well there are a number of cars that are ideal for sliding...alot of them can be seen in D1 and other drift comps around the globe....imo the list of cars Ive made below provide the best starting base from factory for those who are just starting out or who have been in the game for awhile..

FC3S & FD3S RX7..

FC3S - Sep '85-Mar '89 (Series 4)
FC3S - Apr '89-Nov '91 (Series 5) *round tail lights*
FD3S - Dec '91-Aug '02

They each come with a fairly powerful rotary from factory with either a 13B turbo (FC) or 13B-REW Twin Turbo (FD3S)...
Both have great weight distribution and the handling, engine and driveline have no major weaknesses. However the rotary engines do require regular maintenance and need to be treated good in order to stay reliable... I would think about doing a rebuild for maximum reliability and they need coilovers asap as the factorys items just arent up to par...They can prove difficult to drift as the power delivery is alot smoother than piston engines and can catch the driver out...They are also very snappy and can bite suddenly, and the lowend torque can hurt the Rx7's at low engine/road speeds...

Toyota JZX90/100 Chaser/Cresta/ Mark II etc..

*1JZ-GTE 2.5L turbo six cyl, 5 spd, RWD*

JZX90 - Sep '92-Aug '96
JZX100 - Sep '96-Aug '01

The 1JZ-GTE engine was very good especially when it came out later with the (1JZ-GTE VVT-i) single turbo model...The engines are very tunable and responds well to modifications and is well engineered...The chassis lacks some driver feel but has no major weakness and if you have kids the 4 doors are a plus
It is however fairly heavy and the manual gearbox is a little weak...With a good suspension setup to make it as responsive and controllable as the smaller drift cars will help it a great deal...It has plenty of midrange torque and can cause unexpected spins for noob sliders.

Teh Nissan Family...

HCR32 & ECR33 RWD (GTS-t) Models

R32 - May '89-Aug '93
R33 - Sep '93-May '98

They are both excellent to slide with lots of driver feedback...The RB20 (junk!) and RB25 engines are flexible items and make some decent power...The R33 carries a higher curb weight and can dull the chassis response...gearbox's of the RB25 models are very strong and seem to handle a beating fine...They also require a bit more suspension work due to their size/weight to keep in touch with the smaller S-Chassis cousins...The RB engines are easy to mod in order to make more power and torque and can produce some scary numbers, but be careful because they arent unbreakable

S13 Silvia & 180sx

S13 Silvia (CA18DET) May '88-Dec '90 *CA18DET = 1.8L turbo*

PS13 Silvia (SR20DET) Jan '91-OCt '93 *SR20DET = 2L turbo*

RS13 180sx (CA18DET) Apr '89-Dec '90

RPS13 180sx (SR20DET) Jan '91-Dec '98

They each have a very tunable chassis with its predictabel nature making it easy to drive on the limit with few traps for noobs...S13's are great drift cars for those on a budget..However the CA18DET models dont have quite enough power as the SR20DET model, but still driftable...The S13 has smaller brakes than the later S14s, the exception being the later 180sx's...With stock suspension the chassis does have some understeer problems at low speeds..

S14 Silvia..

'93-Jan '99 (SR20DET)

*'96-'97 was the year the front end saw a cosmetic change*

The S14 has great power straight from factory and a balanced chassis with great driver feedback...The S14 is very easy to drift, with an infinitely tunable in all areas of performance for the chassis, engine, brakes etc! There aren't any major problems with this model s-chassis, and has the strongest gearbox out of all Silvias...

S15 Silvia...

Jan '99-Aug '02 (SR20DET)

The S15 has key suspension improvements over the S14 and makes for a beautifully balanced chassis with excellent driver feedback.. This s-chassis is the best of the Silvia family for drifting from factory and is infinitely tunable in all areas of performance for the chassis, engine, brakes etc! However its more expensive to purchase and repair than the other s-chassis..It also has a fragile 6-speed gearbox when under pressure...However with a stiffer and better balanced chassis from factory it makes it the best overall s-chassis..

Toyota AE86 Sprinter/Trueno

May '83-Apr'87

The hachi roku has a very responsive and lively chassis combined with an anorexic curb weight with a decent driving position...With an infinite tuning ability, it can adapt components fro other cars such as a MR2 or even a Silvia's suspension bits and pieces...with engine swaps like SR20DET's or 3S-GTE (MR2 engine) will give it crazy performance! They are getting older and harder to find all the time... They do have driveline weaknesses - aka snapping driveshafts when using grippy tyres! Hachi Roku lacks power and torque compared to the other cars on this list!

man that stressed my brain out...took me ages to write and wont be happening again anytime soon = :sleep

also a car that is HUGELY underated in my eyes is the newer BMW 3-series. I can't remember which magazine did it but they had Ken Gushi and Milan drive 10 cars and rate them as drift cars and the BMW took it as the best one overall. I also saw one being used at a drift day and it looked to be extremely stable and got good angle... and it was stock.

Basically, anything RWD will work if you can drive. A local guy won a drift comp in a Miata haha.

Yes, basically anything will go sideways, but how well it goes sideways and stays sideways is the difference. A majority of RWD vehicles can not be drift competitive on a professional drift level no matter what the modifications are.

i take it u mean the M3 models?

i forget which magazine did a write up, but i think it was a euro mag...said the M3 was 2nd to the S15 in being able to drive sideways

they're still girls cars though....either that or poor old ppl's mid life crisis car hehe
thats only a personal opinion so please no one take offense.

in terms of drift cars. the great appeal in terms of judging what's a 'good'' drift car.....is well, affordability.
decent power/rwd and good aftermarket support

hence the cars which are more favoured are the ones that are "easier" to build.
lets face it, if ur gunna be drifting, ur gunna have to be able to afford to replace shit at a budget that doesnt supercede the fun factor of drifting. otherwise its just not worth it. and its DEFINITELY not a sport which u can get away with show-car mentality. unless ur a poser, something is eventually gunna happen, and u cant get too licked about shit when shit happens.

drifting in the U.S. sucks so hard I just finished watching the drift event on speed and these drivers suck ass. Its nothing compared to what ive seen over seas then you have all of the drivers talking and they dont know shit about their set ups and have been drifting for a short amount of time.
