NHRA "countdown to the championship" format
I don't know how many people have been following this but it's safe to say the NHRA has followed NASCAR into making the last 1/4 of the racing season a joke. Only problem is the NHRA joke is going to be much more obvious.
Starting at Indy the points will be wiped clean and 1st place through 8th will have 2070-2000 points (10 points extra for each place, totaling 80 for first). Now they'll run the normal 16 car field but only those 8 drivers are really racing for a championship. That already sounds like a bad idea but then you mix in people like Kalita, Force, Schumacher, etc. that have multiple cars, some in and some outside of the championship you're looking at basically a bunch of by runs until a real matchup comes.
This will only get worse as they cut down the field to 4 drivers and then finally 2 for the final 2 events of the season.
I understand what they're trying to do and all but it's just stupid. If you are going to have a playoff style championship, do it and send the other drivers home... no one will show up to watch 2 cars race though i'm sure so they might as well just stick to what has worked for 50 years.
I'm still in favor of a match race style format. It's true to NHRA's roots and will be far more exciting than this BS. Maybe run 2 rounds of the event on saturday and then run the semi finals/finals on sunday along with the match races following the finals. Could even run the entire event on saturday and then run best 2 out of 3 on sunday for the match race.
