How to properly do a burnout

I'm going to write this for a RWD car for now just because it's what i have the most experience with drag racing. I'll edit it later and add a FWD one but in general they're very similar concepts. A lot of the things i'll say are not necessary and can be skipped but it'd be ideal to follow it. The most important part is to find a consistant routine and keep it because it's hard to tune your setup if you aren't consistant.

1. Drive around the water box and back in so the rear tires are in it- Almost no one does this because most drag cars have a turning radius that'd rival the titanic but most motorcycles do. If you drive through it your front tires will drag water up to the starting line which your rear tires will go through. Water on the rear tires is bad for traction to say the least.

2. Spin the tires about 1-2 times to get the entire tire wet and then pull out of the water/bleach box- If you do the burnout inside the water box it kicks water up inside the wheelwells which will drip back down onto the tire as you're staging. Very few people do this either but one day while watching the SS/A Cuda class at the US Nationals i noticed the entire class doing it. IN a highly competative class like that, everything helps.

3. Activate the line lock/brakes to keep the car in place. - Pretty self explanitory. You want to start the burnout in one place unless you have a top fuel dragster.

4. Start spinning the tires- I'm sure you know how to do this. You don't have to spin them for very long, usually just long enough to get a small cloud of smoke.

5. Shift into the highest gear possible-
The higher the gear the hotter the tire will get and the less strain there will be on the motor.

6. Let off the brake/line lock and drive out of the burnout.

7. Let off before the tire grabs to avoid driveline shock- Driveline shock is when the tire suddenly grabs and is very hard on the driveline components.

8. Rev the motor a few times to clean it out and stage.- There is nothing worse than staging and when you go to launch it bogs. Make sure the motor is cleaned out before getting to the line.

Some people also do a dry hop to make sure everything is normal.

There is also mixed reviews if you even need to do a burnout on street tires. Slicks and street slicks NEED to be warmed up to operate properly. Street tires show a much smaller improvement after a burnout.

disclaimer: A lot of the things mentioned above are very hard on the car so i take no responsibility if you mess it up doing this. This is just the PROPER way IMO on how to do a burnout and if your car's drivetrain isn't setup to take the stress of your motor, you might not want to try it.

I pull up my e-brake, leave it in first and drop the clutch around 4500-5000 ish. Let down the e-brake once you're satisfied you put down enough rubber.
