firefox
I just downloaded firefox and wanna get rid of IE. how can i get rid of it completely? is that a good idea? its no longer in my add/remove programs area so thats not an option i deleted the icons and stuff but i know its still there if i wanted to get to it. i also use aol and im assuming aol is running off of ie? how can i get rid of ie all together? and is it reccommended. im also running windows xp. im also not sure what else is using ie as a back end either so i dont know what else can happen if i were to completely eliminate ie. any help is appreciated.

Don't even try to get rid of IE. Delete all of the shortcuts, don't use it, etc, but, Windows Explorer (the meat and potatoes of Windows) relies on IE, IIRC. So, it'd be hard as hell to delete IE, and you'd be fucked if you did.

as long as firefox is set as your default browser, just ignore the few remaining pieces of it. It's actually kinda good to have a backup because certain things don't like firefox (my login at school comes up instantly on IE but takes like 2 minutes on firefox).

Click on tools, go to add-ons, and click the get extensions link. There's a lot of really handy add-ons. I really like the All-in-One gestures extension. It lets you navigate by holding the right mouse button and drawing stuff...so handy, I love it.

tabbed browsing is the one thing i can't live without. Besides that i havn't gotten to much into it. The autosave password stuff is nice but it kinda scares me.

IE can not be removed from Windows XP, this "non-removal" started with Windows 2000. It's embedded into the OS and is there for good. It's core components are used throughout windows (you just don't see / realize it). Just leave it and delete the shortcuts like suggested.
On a side note IE7 is pretty good, it has tabbed browsing and is a little more streamlined.

If you can explain that a lil better ide love it cuz it sounds kinda interesting indeed. PLus i have a touch pad instead of a mouse so it may not come as handy as im using a notebook.

so my assumptions about ie are correct then. I figured ie was like a backbone kinda thing but i couldnt confirm it. Though doesnt it give you the option of installing it if you do the custom set up when installing xp?? what happens if you choose not to install ie?? will it leave the browser out only and install all the other core components of ie or is that not even an option anymore??
btw john if you are on im me about the anti virus let me know if you can still help me out on that issue. Thanks guys for the helpful responses.

I've been using firefox for over a year now and I keep IE because my school won't let me log into my classes in ff.
But yeah IE is there for the long run. I used to work in a place where this one guy surfed the net way too much and they "deleted" IE but he kept just opening folders and typing in websites

When installing XP it doesn't give you the option on IE, it gets installed wether you like it or not. I'll have to get the info on the anti-virus software later......I'm going to be now, just got done with work

When I want to open up a new tab, I hold down the right mouse button, and draw a quick line upwards, and a new tab opens. When I want to go back to the previous page, I hold the right mouse button, and draw a quick line from right to left. When I want to go forward a page, it's the opposite. To close a tab, I hold the right mouse button, and draw a line down, then right. It's become a habit, now, which is why I can't ever go back to IE...not being able to navigate like that is so annoying. Whenever people watch me go to web pages, they're amazed by how I browse.

some of the add-ons are useful, others are good for entertainment. i have one called "mouse gestures" which is useful. to open a new tab, window, go back, refresh, etc, all i need to do is hold down the right button and move the mouse.

The only trouble I have is when visiting my school's website...but everyone has trouble with that site, IE and Firefox. Haven't tested Opera with it yet, though.
