Wireless Network...

What neccessary pre-cautions do I need to take with Wireless network in my house? Mostly 1st desktop to 2nd desktop but ocassionally to my Xbox in living room, and I plan on buying a Laptop soon. I've heard its easier to go thru security on Wireless networks...so, any advice?

set up a network jey that only you and your peers know. Change the default login on your wireless router. Get a good fire wall. Even though the router should have one built still get one. Check your logs to see if there are any IP addresses that you might not know. Good Luck

you can also limit the number of DHCP addresses it will hand out. so if you have 4 things only let it give out 4 addys. You can only allow certain mac addys to connect also which is pretty locked down as far as people using your connection.

Change the channel from default, turn of SID broadcast. you can do all kinds of stuff.

I would just setup your router with a WEP (Web Encrypted Password) so your neighbours can't jack your connection. I know I jacked my neighbours until I bought a router

Another precaution is to only allow specific MAC addresses on the wireless network. Go around to all your devices and copy down the MACs, enter them into the table on the wireless router. MACs can be spoofed but the more roadblocks you can put in front of a hacker the better.

make sure......
rename the default passwords on ALL your equpiment
stay off the 192.168.x.x subnet
use WEP with the highest encryption
don't broadcast your SSID

im pretty sure most home user networks are hacker proof considering that most hackers will use packet sniffers to hack your WEP key. this process takes millions of packets which can take a small home network weeks or months to accumulate depending on the activity and number of users. as long as you do the basics: WEP, address limits, etc. you'll be more than safe.
