I've always use and like Norton corporate ed. Don’t think it ever espiers, but then again I don't pay for software.
Tren Mico has a fee online scan, but i like real time protection.

i strongly recommend ditching anything mcaffe or norton. They basically do nothing but slow your machine and prevent you from having fun.
I highly recommend going to www.download.com and get these programs.
spybot SD(enable the TEA TIMER!!!)
Adaware
ccleaner
hijack this
spyware blaster
use the microsoft antivirus program also
update and scan all of these programs every 3-5 days
use mozilla firefox instead of IE
It has a built in popup blocker which works well and is WAY better than IE.
I build my own computers and have delt with alot of computer threats and this is where my advice comes from.

P4 is WAY overratted.
I promise my 1.8 AMD duron will hold its own with a p4.
I only have 768mb ram.
The programs I show listed above: block registry changes, prevent spyware pages from even opening silently, delete temp files and clean files that slow up ur machine.
It doesn't slow the processor down. Its the backruning processes that take up memory. unseen tasks. If you look at the hijack this log there are about 5-10 different things norton runs that slow ur computer and make it hard to view online media.
I guess if you don't know computers that well norton is a good option. but it really does nothing. The viruses now block norton from deleting it...so whats the point of having it.
plus the others are free. I havent had a virus in....a year. I actually got the virus and couldnt get rid of it a year and half ago when I had norton.

my dad had macafee on his cause his computer is a dell, and the thing ran out and wasnt going to protect his computer at all, so i am going to delete it. im more concerned with an antivirus program cause i already took care of spyware for him.

There are different versions of Norton. And I can say some do slow it down a lot but corp. edition doesn’t as munch. When Viruses are undeletable then the company usually comes out with an update that fixes it or give you directions on how to deal with it.
I wasn’t doubting your computer should have said running such programs as Norton... with computers these days you'll not notice the slowness. Happy
His Question was Antivirus program? Or did it say tweaking and spy ware. I don’t think he’s going too always make sure his dad’s computer is updated. But I do agree with you on using some of those programs and keeping reg. clean.
You can have all the programs you want, but there will always be a back door.
And as for experience I’m by far from A+, MCSE and troubleshooting… but in design. But hay what do I know I push buttons all day.

if anything use symantec anti virus over norton anti virus. they both may be from the same company but i've heard SAV is much better than NAV
i use Grisoft AVG antivirus. it is free to use, updates are free, and it works.

I use NIS05, it catches all kinds of shit.
There is nothing perfect, the net is a filthy infected world and you will catch something no matter what if you surf the net.

From my understaning you can't stop from getting spyware, but you can block it. And virus protection is only as good as it's last update, so on any given day there's over 10 new viruses created....300 a month, so if you update every 3-5 days aren't u leaving yourself at risk? You need something auto updating 24/7.... not free!
Oh yes...I agree on Mozilla..way better than IE and safer.
