Upgrading laptop help
Okay, i bought this laptop and really only planned to use it at school but... i've come to love having my own computer and use it for everything now so i want to upgrade it some.
Specs:
Toshiba A65
2700 MHz celeron
192 MB of ram
40gb hd
I want to upgrade ram (probably to 512) and get wireless internet. What should i look for? And what brands should i avoid?
I'm also debating upgrading the HD but i really don't want to reformat and lose all my programs/music/pictures/porn while i'm at home.. and then when i go to school i'm way too busy to redownload all that.

before you go out and purchase the ram, make sure that you get ram that will work with the laptop.
check around on the net to see how much memory the laptop will accept. the motherboard may be able to read up to a certain amount.
a 40 gig hd is fine, but be aware that there are hard drives over 100 gigs for laptops nowadays. and space is becoming cheaper by the day. you may consider the harddrive upgrade as well.
for wireless, you can pick up any wireless G pcmcia card. im sure your laptop has an open pcmcia slot.

wireless cards are very cheap nowadays, go anywhere and you can find one. and as far as a bigger harddrive, go with what nismo said and get an external hard drive. a 100gb harddrive is maybe around 100-120 bucks and that way you keep what you want on your current hard drive and then whatever you run out of space for, bam external hard drive

i'm fine with the hard drive. I was actually considering an external just so i could get a lot of the crap stored elsewhere and just run programs off of my HD.
What i meant on which wireless card to get is i see 54Mbps, 108mbps, 240Mbps, etc. The wireless is something i need because the place i'm moving into in a week has wireless. I for sure do have a port open that'll accept the card also.
With ram, how do i find out the max my motherboard can accept? I have a feeling i already might be maxed out. My laptop is like 2 years old but it was just a cheap one to get by.
