Actually have been spending most of my time trying to fix issues with the car. Car is a textbook example of why a good deal initially on a car can turn into a bad deal fast.

the fact that it is constantly driving two more wheels doesn't help either

Pictures from last summer:
*Up to date pictures*
Grille block:
Cut back bumper:
Last tank was 44.5 mpg. Not sure if it was a fluke but the last 3 tanks have been over 40. Need to get the tires balanced still.. starting to run short on ideas. Exhaust needs to be fixed.

Yeah, you can't see it in those pictures but one side has a 90-91 corner (one showing, faded kryloned orange clear corner off my Si) and the other has some ebay 88-89 one.

Havn't done anything to the car outside of drive it. Been averaging around 46 mpg with it with some tanks as high as 49. Looking for a set of either HX or VX wheels (or possibly even Insight ones) for it because it needs 2 new tires anyways and has some heavy ass Accord wheels right now. Would really like to find a set of HX ones I guess because I can use the low rolling resistance tires designed for the Insight and they supposedly give about a 6% increase in gas mileage.

youch. I'm going to try to get my rex back on the road this week, since the Datsun's v8 killed itself ( http://madnessmanual.com/2008/05/27/...ine-part-iii/). I'm hoping this crappy DX motor gets somewhat decent mileage, but I think I'm going to emulate Njn63's project and go balls to the wall for mileage and use it as an uber-commuter (hybrids be damned, I'll be getting better mileage). I picked up a d15b7 head that's going to go on my current d15 block, I just need to figure out which intake manifold I need.
Njn63, your car's looking sweet, in a homebrew project kind of way (that's my favorite kind, by the way).

I actually got over 50 mpg on a couple tanks last week. I need to update my spreadsheet and see what it looks like.
I started a new job this week and now live 3 miles from work so it's going to take weeks to get any data now, sucks.
Oh, and don't try to get professional when making a grille block. I used some nice ass machine screws on parts of it and then used zip ties when I ran out. 2 out of the 3 machine screws fell out and I lost a bracket, the last one was barely holding on otherwise I probably would of lost the entire thing. I zip tied it for now, looks ghetto but it works better (and it's probably the last thing someone will notice on the car considering it's 3 colors and has more dents than straight panels )

Is it a bad thing that I have a b16 swapped 91 DX, I have tons of fun, some pokey driving, some fast stuff, some playfullness in traffic, and I still generally get around 34-36 mpg on average?
=) I love this car.

The datsun got impounded. Here's the correct link:
Rattling Engine, part III « Madness Shop Manual (the post date got changed when I switched servers). I have it back now, in my new house in San Leandro. It's happily hanging out in the garage, waiting for my 400ci Impala motor (lightly breathed on, it's putting out 473hp @ 5400rpm).
I actually picked up a few newer parts for my rex, and am going to convert the DX to mpfi, then start getting parts together for the 13b swap. Until then, it's going to be my grocery-getter and daily driver.

Yeah, I expect it to. The car runs fairly rich while cold. I actually have been still averaging over 45 mpg though.. I attribute a lot of that to the weather being decent.

Haha, that almost motivates me to do some more work on this thing. I have a couple of ideas still that will help in theory.. but I'm not sure how much.
One of the ideas I was actually debating was moving the exhaust up on the bumper into the "dead air" to help fill it. There were a couple people playing with fans on semi's and seeing results, but I'm not sure there is enough CFM coming from the exhaust to even make a difference. I guess it's time to break out the pen and paper and do some calculations. Well that, and figure out how to do it and make it look decent.
Without a doubt though the one mod I can say without hesitation will help gas mileage is cutting the rear bumper and ditching mud flaps if you have them. This would help any car where the bumper is like a CRX and extends downward for no reason except cosmetics. People have seen gains at the drag strip from it and I've seen definite gains in mpg.
