#1 CEL from HELL!!!

I have had the #1 CEL (oxygen content) come on several times over the past 3-4 years, no big deal. I would drive it for a while maybe change the 02 sensor and it would go away. I wouldn't even know that there was a problem it if the light wasn't on.

This time, however, when it comes on I feel the engine loose power and it starts to sputter and pop upon acceleration. I can be driving along with no problem and it will come on. If I stop and turn the key off, then restart, it goes away for a while. I am still having difficulty cold starting my car...not sure if it is related?

I plan on changing the 02 sensor this weekend. Could anything else be causing this?...ECU?...IACV? I need some more ideas on what could be causing this. Any help would be appreciated.

I changed the 02 sensor and took it for a drive. No CEL and it ran better but did not fix everything. I will know more when I drive to work.

I know they are not related with the 02 sensor...but...recently I started getting feedback through my stereo and my VAFC is loosing the rpm signal (but not the dash tach). These 2 happened at the same time. I still have a some slight missfires associated with these symptoms. I just replaced the distributor with a new one. ??? I have checked all connections.

Anybody out there???

I asked about getting the codes scanned at Advanced autoparts and they said that they don't do OBD0.

I'm thinking ECU also. I got some kind of a power spike in my system and it zapped several sensors...maybe the ecu too. I have an extra PM6. If my problems don't clear up I will swap them out.

-I have to use an "auto" PM6 or a PS9. Since I have an automatic.-

I'm pretty sure that the VAFC loosing the RPM signal and the stereo having feedback are coming from the same problem. They happened around the some time, after replacing the Dizzy. However, I get no feedback when playing a CD.

Thanks for the reply's.

Well, I figured it out.

My newly reconditioned distributor died today. I had it on for three weeks. Luckily it has a lifetime warranty. I am going to replace it with a new one and pay the difference.

I think my MSD blaster coil may be killing them? I am not going to reinstall it.

This explains the feedback in the stereo, the missfiring and the VAFC loosing its rpm signal.

We shall see. I am going to replace it tomorrow afternoon.

Son of a!!! Nope, that was not in the instructions. I did not know.

I am picking up the new dizzy today, installing it and leaving the MSD off.

That would explain why I've gone through 3 distributors?

Tell me more.

it burns the hell out of the dizzy. It actually is in the instructions, but its kinda in fine print. I burned up my cap and external coil when mine was installed.
Problem is, you basically have spark shooting back into the dizzy. Instead on coming out. It likes a lightning storm under your cap. (lamens terms)

Hmmm. That would expalin the burnt-looking rotor and points.

Well at this point I have a brand new dizzy installed. I got my car back to the house. I just need to adjust the timing.

Can this screw-up of mine fry anything other than the dizzy and the external coil? I am getting some other wierd codes...cannot remember them right now...I will post them this weekend if they do not go away after some minor tuning.

I am going to give the MSD coil to my brother to make a flamethrower for his VW exhaust.

I'm an Idiot!!!
Thanks for the response.
