yay im finally turbo'in my rex!!!

hey guys, i dont really post too much on here (college and 3 jobs kill my free time). but i thought i needed to make time for this

all this will be installed on my 89 crx with a 1st gen b16 in it.

the details - full-race stage 1GT turbo kit (garret GT28rs ball bearing), and a boatload of other parts lol.... 3" thermal research exhaust, hondata s300 (convertin to obd1), RC 750cc injectors, tial BOV and wastegate, full race traction bars, the list goes on...and can make a nice detailed one if anyone is interested.

so far the install hasnt been too bad. i relocated the battery to the back, put the new fuel pump in (damn rusty bolts), and started mounting turbo stuff for mock up/cutting purposes. the worst thing is going to be electrical/fuel. mainly because it is horribly ghetto wired in there from the b16 swap (we didnt do a good job) so ill have to go in and correct all that stuff, then convert to obd1...

ill post up my progress as i get things done and such. more pics for sure too!!

and now, some pix

all the parts piled up...

i had to do a silly ricer shot lol

that super-sexy full race turbo manifold

the turbo

top view, stuff just loosley bolted on to mock up the intercooler and such

cool garage shot. the 3000GT is my buddies, that thing is FAST (12sec 1/4)

shot of my CRX

3000GTs are too heavy. I'm sure they can be made to be fast, but they have so much mass behind them that it's almost not worth the effort. I used to smoke them in the NSX

Is it a VR4? Because AWD>FWD. But , from what I hear, 3kgt's are kinda bitches to mod.

I agree with you, but those AWD cars are pigs in terms of weight, 3780lbs is just stupid for a sports car. Now if you said 993 twin turbo ..... that's different

very nice choice on the turbo kit. Who's going to be tuning it?

Deffinatly post up results though. I'd especially like to hear what the response is like with that setup.

those weigh in around 3300 lbs, which isn't super light either (but a lot heavier compared to a rex). the extra 100 HP off the bat makes the difference

Yeah extra 100hp and an extra 100 ft/lbs of torque minus 480lbs!!! Way off topic, but I have driven both cars and the P-car is hands down LOTS faster.

1997 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.7 12.3
1994 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 5.7 14.2

Sorry for being way off topic...... just paying homage to one of my favorite cars.

Believe it or not I've actually driven both a 911 turbo (996) and a VR-4 as well. I was impressed with both but the Porsche owns all. It should though as it's $120k while the Mitsu is like $50k brand new. I've also driven the Carrera GT and that owns the Ford GT. Porsche > all (except Ferrari)

Congrats man on a sweet setup. Take pics after the intercooler is on there and bumper is back on from what the guys at FR say you need to cut the bumper up quite a bit. Itll help me out since my kit should be here in another week or two(ordered it a month ago from full-race) Last weekend I got the traction bar in and put it on, it wasnt too bad, the only thing that sucks is the bolts that connect the new "arm" to the lower control arm are too long to put in with the axle in. The axle goes right over the top of the hole and you need to take it out of the way or......do what I did. after the bolts are in they stick out about a 1/4 inch out of the bottom of the hole, so carefully trim them, then you can get the bolts in without removing all that crap. But then its a real pain to tighten them cause you can only move like a 1/4 turn at a time, so really I dont know what would be easier lol. youll see when you do it. oh and a tip before you remove the stock stuff, take a measurement from the center of the rear wheel to the center of the front wheel, that way when you put the bar on you can bring the caster close to where it should be until its aligned. What your running for a radiator?

lol lots of posts since i last checked

its a VR4, and he has gone thru alotta crapt to make it fast, but he knows those cars really well. i think he has owned like 5 or so haha

I already got the traction bars on, i wish i measured that crap ill just use one of my friends CRXs to get the measurement. for the axle clearance problem i just dropped the lower control arm down with a jack under it (cause i didnt want to mess with that damn axle).

im using the full-race 1/2 radiator. speaking of that i need to get tabs welded to that and get the oil return welded to my oil pan. i think ill try to get that done the beginnin of next week.

more pics for sure!!!

Eh dont feel bad I didnt measure before either, lol hey when you get the measurement let me know if you can, haha thanks, i just put them where they "look" right and made sure that both the left and right were the same till its aligned. That was good thinking on dropping the lower control arm, I had the same thought except I didnt have a jack while I was doing it, I managed to do the whole job with the car on the ground! that was a pain considering my car is waay low. And then once the bar is on it sticks farther down than the stock cross member. I wish I would have gone with their 1/2 radiator, but I bought my fluidyne half like a year ago so I couldnt spend another $400 or whatever on a new one of theirs. But its funny because when I was ordering everything I asked about it and they said that in order for the fluidyne to work it would need to be leaned back to work(whiich I've seen and think it looks kinda ghetto) But I figured out a way to make it work! So my hood closes, and the radiator sits up right, woohoo, now hopefully the manifold and everything clears it, lol. But get some pics of the radiator in if you can Id like to see what it looks like.......

so i worked on it some more saturday most of the day. i fixed the electral rats nest in the floorpan for the ECU....got the subharness hooked up for my obd1 stuff.

i also cut the bumper support almost in half....it had to be cut alot to get that intercoller to fit right. but now i have almost an inch gap to the tabs i can puch it in closer due to the backdoor design (tubo goes right into the IC) so im not too sure what to do about that....

my buddy zack cuttin thebumper support

a snake chillin outside the garage....that was odd to see considering itsw gettin colder out

here is the support, notice how much is cut out, i had to cut even more on the left side too so that it would be level....

here is the space btween the support and tab

all the extra wires i cut out lol...

i still need to get that measurement from the center of the rear wheel to the front.... other things left to do - a lil engine bay wiring (dizzy, injectors), mount radiator, and runnin oil/coolant lines, and then just bolting everything up.
