Super Low Engine Temp
With the weather getting cold around here lately, I've been noticing something in the CRX. It takes a really long time for the engine to reach operating temp - according to the temp gauge. I'm talking like over 15 minutes of continous driving. Then, this weekend on my return trip home from emissions testing I looked down to see the temp gauge all the way at the bottom. I turned the heat off, and it came up a little. The outside temp was near 40 and I was traveling 50mph or so.
What could be the cause of this? I don't beleive it's a bad gauge because the temperature will flucuate. It seems to work normal when it's warm outside. The radiator doesn't look like anything special, in fact it looks pretty old. What are your guys' thoughts?

does it quit blowing heat when the temp gauge falls? Sounds like you have a stuck thermostat.

on my integra when cruising on the freeway and my heater full blast i can see my temp gauge go down to near zero. i think its an artificially influenced condition from having the heater core fully open. i doubt the water temp is actually that cold, judging from the engine stil being as hot as it usually is after a normal drive.

I didn't notice a drop in heat from the vents. But, the engine is still hot, just like with Striation's integra.

possible thermostat being open longer or stuck open or it could be the heater core. check both of them out.

you could also partially block your radiator to prevent some of the cooling on that. Cardboard works well.

What would I be looking for? How bad of a problem are either of these?

It actually had a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator when I bought it. I pulled it out because I found it in the summer. I wasn't thinking too far ahead.

Not that big a problem but you may want to have it looked at. you can pull the top hose out from the engine and the thermo should be in there you can check it and then the heater core should be near the firewall towards the bottom.

Glad to see you guys are using the multi-quote button
As far as the thermostat being taken out all together. I have personally never seen this but Jeff says he has all the time.

Geez...my car does this too but I didn't think anything was wrong. I just make sure the fluid level's all the way up and I still get heat.
I'll have to check for my T-Stat this weekend.

No, in the summer the engine seemed to be at normal operating temp.
Thanks for everybody's comments. This is a great help!

In that case you should buy my b-series motor and become familiar with it. If you buy my motor it comes with a free car. Check my thread in the classifieds.
Ive only had one d-series honda in my whole life and it was a 89 civic hatch with the 4sp manual transmission.

Hey now!!! I always run with a thermostat.
If you do in fact have a good thermostat, change you water temp sensor. It is under the dizzy...two prong connection.
