The new engine build thread
Rod length, ratios, cylinder side loads, displacement, RPM, power goals are all being worked over right now. I've gone from the crazy 2.26lt engine combinations and became too worried about rod lengths without decking the block. I tossed around a CRV block idea and found that unless I "posted" it I may have reliability issues. I also wanted to keep my busted up block (I get sentimental about this stuff). My brain is basically spinning in a engine theory mess however, I'm 90% sure my bottom end will consist of....
- ERL re-sleeved ITR block, line bored, and fitted with ACL bearings.
- Crower 92mm stroker crank
- Endyn roller-wave pistons (11:1) with Ultra-high wrist pin locations (for long rod)
- Endyn long rod combination used with their pistons
Displacement will be 2088cc or just about 2.1lt
With the trick Endyn high wrist pin pistons I'll be able to use a long connecting rods keeping the cylinder wall stress down. I should also be able to rev this setup to around 8500rpm.
The head is next, and I know for sure it will be ITR head with Manley valve train and my current cam setup. Head Games will be called in for the preparation. I really hope I can salvage my head.
I'm super excited and my estimates are 310whp and 220ft/lbs. I can't even begin to imagine how much quicker this setup will be.
Engine will be out by sometime next week and I can asses the damage. Photos will be posted and we can all learn from what failed.

that may or may not happen. I have heard a few rumblings about the blower porting being the old "smoke and mirrors" trick. Then Jeff himself said he doesn't think it's worth it.
I may just send it to Magnason to get rebuilt.

I know money isn't that big of a deal, but have you considered just using an LS crank (89mm)? I have a lot of faith in OEM Honda cranks.
I assume you mean the Head Games that did the head work on Full-Race's Pinks car? There are a few shops that go by that name unfortunatly but that's the one i always think of. From what i've heard, they do great work.
Otherwise, awesome. I'm a fan of high comp boost cars.

factory forged parts arent too shabby...jeff tuned my buddy jay's 400whp LS that was using a stock crank (pretty much the only stock part in his engine build), havent had any issues with it.

I would rather go with the 92mm crank. The 89mm will give me 2022cc and although it's not much different the 92mm will get me almost to 2100cc
I know the CRV uses a 92mm crank but I'm not sure if that will fit in the B18 block. I mean money is a big consideration for me but, if I have the whole thing appart and a new crank is gonna cost me around $400- don't you think it's worth it??

All the above mentioned parts are excellent parts and should make for an monster build!
A balanced LS crank is a very very good option if you wanted to cut the displacement back a little bit. Or it's a great option on a 1.8l to bump displacement up a bit.
Who will be assembling this monster? I'm not so sure this is something my crazy DIY hands would even attempt. Too many customs clearances to check. ACL bearings will definitely require proper clearance.
Can't wait to see this thing

You're a wise man Will I will be assembling the engine HOWEVER, I'm sending the crank to ERL along with my block. They will size the proper ACL main bearings when they do the line boring. I can handle the rod bearings or I may have Endyn do it for me since the crank and rods are coming from them. Once I get everything back I will however be checking all the measurements myself. I plan on a healthy investment in dial gauges and specialty tools. I don't plan on leaving this to the pros (like my head was ). Even though ERL and Endyn are great vendors I plan on checking every tolerance from the bore to the crank end play. The bearings will be checked with a micrometer and then plastigauge'd. I have plenty of time and I'm gonna try and take massive amounts of photos.

i still think your valves were running too loose. you gained some torque, but didn't pick up any horsepower, which happens when there is too much valve lash. your cam smacks away on the valve heads and boom, you've got problems. where did it break? the head of the valve?

Your mind is in the right spot. I have been thinking about this today as well. What got me thinking is when this went boom Jeff was adjusting my cam gears However, before we insinuate anything I was running a GSR intake cam which is not that wild especially since I had an ITR cam in there before. Plus, the kicker is .....I had a noise on the SAME cylinder since day one. As far as the lash I run my valves at Honda spec, .007 / .006 .
Watch this video.....

Now that's the first time I started the engine!! The noise was loud!! Remember that was when I was all motor and had the TODA Spec Cs. At the time I thought the noise was due to the cams so I didn't pay it much mind. When I went SC and switched to ITR cams the noise was still there.

did you check the lash before running it?
that sounded like it could have been lifters, but it's hard to tell where the noise is coming from in video from what i saw of it.

Of course I did......The noise is impossible to pinpoint in the video but trust me it was traced to #2 intake. I am pretty sure the guide was trashed from day one.

that sucks man. if you get noises like that next time you get your head back, take it back to the shop and tell them it's got issues!

Sounds awesome! New tools are almost as fun as the build itself I'm sure you can rest well knowing that a company like ERL and Endyn will be taking care of your motor. I wouldn't hesitate to let them take care of it all, although I can see why you have your uneasiness in trusting the "pro."
