Yup....RIO died this morning, but not due to an accident. More details to follow as soon as I find out what's wrong.

Over 40 cars to date and multiple engine overhauls and I have never seen anything this strange........
I got up this morning and drove her to work. About 4 miles from my house I tangled with this nasty Dinan supercharged 540i. We got up to around 135mph (twice). We then slowed down to highway speeds drove for about 3 miles and we both pulled into a Dunkin Donuts. We chatted a bit about each others ride and then parted ways. When he leaves I pull RIO into a parking spot, shut her down and go inside for coffee. I come out and go to start the car and I get 2 really slow cranks then it stops. I hold the key there for a moment trying to figure out if it's my battery and then I see some smoke coming from my glove compartment area. It doesn't billow out, it's very minor and dissipates right away. Also, it doesn't smell like anything burning. Nonetheless, I immediately turn the key off and get my extinguisher. I open the hood and look around. Nothing burning, doesn't smell, nothing leaking, everything looks perfect!! I look in the oil cap and it looks fine, I smell the cap and it smells nice and fresh. Look at the dipstick and I find the same thing, nice clean oil. Check my timing belt, nice and tight with no signs of slippage. I decide not to force the issue and get the car towed home. I didn't want to try and crank it again and do more damage. While I was waiting for the truck I let her cool down and looked in the radiator, even that looked perfect. So tonight when I get home from work I will take the plugs out and inspect them and try to turn the engine by hand. This is what I think happened.......
1) dead starter
2) dead battery (battery is brand new though so if it is dead then the alternator is bad and why the smoke??)
3) Inter-cooler burst or leaked and the engine is hydro-locked (unlikely)
4) My vavle train noise got the better of me and it's seized up (also unlikely)
The strange thing about diagnosing this is the fact that the car ran really strong and didn't make any noises right before I shut it off. It didn't even stumble or smoke, I just turned the key off and that's it.
Very strange, hopefully the starter just crapped out.

Rio's not dead, she's just in a deep sleep.
I'm voting (hoping) for something electrical. I would normally say battery/alternator charging system is acting up, but your battery light didn't come on, although it's possible it doesn't work (unlikely though).
Starter is possible too, although I would find it kind of weird that it would try to start and then die out like that. Could be a loose wire somewhere, or loose ground.
Like I said, I had to clean my terminals when I threw my tranny back in because it wouldn't start and then it started right up. The battery is also only 1 year old with limited miles on it. When driving you are using the alternator and the battery is mostly idle. It's something you wouldn't notice until you had to start it up again, at which point the terminal wouldn't have enough contact to get the power across. Considering you removed the battery it would be a viable option. On my old CRX I had the same problem. Battery terminals would corrode A LITTLE and wiggle a little loose and it would have trouble starting. I would just score the terminal a little with a screw driver and it would start right up. I never had any battery lights or check engine lights at any time.
The smoke could have been condensation from the AC like you said. When I had AC I would get condensation blowing quite frequently on start up, especially on the passenger side (especially with the heat we had/have today)

Don't even go there yet, and even if this motor was/is dead it will be rebuilt.

RIO's in a coma, she'll be fine. But if something does happen can I have your entire interior? haha I'm kidding, good luck fixing it. I wish I could help.

as long as you can find the circuit and have a diagram it isnt too hard, usually when there is smoke like he said from behind the glove box, you can find opens pretty easliy

true, but its still a pain to figure out where the wire melted, or to run new (depending on what burned up)
