Buy a Wrecked Del Sol d16z6
I have the opertunity to buy a rear-ended DelSol with a d16z6 with >100,000 miles on it, for $400-$500.00.
My '91 Si has been good to me, but she's starting to burn / leak a little oil, and it's *gasp* getting a little slow for me.
I know that the d16z6 is a slightly more powerful motor, and I know I'll have to do the OBD1 conversion.
I'm actually just looking for opinions. Is it worth it for me to buy that car / motor (I know that the z6 was swapped in there)? Is there anything else off of the DelSol that may be useful on my '91 Si? Can I use most of the existing DelSol's wiring harness to do the OBD1 conversion? Is that a good deal in your opinion?
The guy is a friend of mine, and he's mature.. and doesn't beat his vehicles. (He actually bought an 04 Caddy, that shows you how fast he drives)
So as I said, I'm just looking for opinions. Let me hear em.
-Mix!
EDIT: Also, anyone know if the Del Sol's wheels will fit the '91 Si?

I have a Z6 head on a Y7 block and it runs like a champ! Still OBD0 using a vafc controller.

It sounds like it's more trouble than it's worth, unless you're doing all the work yourself. As for the wheels, yeah they'll fit. The difference between a z6 and an a6 in power is so little that you would hate yourself for all the work it would take to put it in.

Cool, I appreciate the opinion.
I would be doing it all myself, but I was kinda doubting that it would be worth the work unless I could scavenge some other parts from the wreck.
Unfortunately, he's not willing to sell me only the head - or else I'd do a mini-me.
I think it may be worth my while to just safe the money and get a ZC down the road like I origionally planned.
I'm just worries that ZC's are getting pretty old, and I'm sure most of the good ones have been imported already. If I swaped in a z6:
a. They'd be more plentiful, and domestic
b. They're quite a bit newer
Decisions, decisions...

When I did the mini me swap I gained at least 15hp over the y7 head. I don't think that the a6 is a vtec...the z6 is a vtec. If it is a good strong motor, it is worth $4-500. What you couldn't use, you could part it out and make more than you payed in the first place. I just bought a wrecked Integra for $1500. I am going to rebuild it for $2000 and let my wife drive it. Get us a pic of the Del Sol. We could give you some better opinions.

Good point! I didn't really even think of parting out the Del Sol.
I haven't seen it since it got rear ended. I'll see if I can go take a look at it and I'll post some shots.

You got pics?
Sounds like a fun little potential project. I may be in the minority but I like the z6 better than zc's.

I'll put it this way, I have so many performance accessories for my D16 engine that my next engine will definately be a Z6 or Y8. Simply because I can drop it right in and go! They are not crazy fast but greatly exceed the normal engine rating for a CRX.
However, I have all the respect in the world for the guys who take it to the next level.

The issue may be moot. I spoke to my buddy, and he thinks he has it sold because he didn't think I was too interested.
$400.00 too
I'll have to keep my eyes out for another z6 deal.. or something. I'm getting itchy to swap something into my rex.

BTW you do not have to go OBD1 to do the swap. I am still OBD0. I have a APEX'i vafc to control the vtec. You can do the OBD1 swap and gain a little more HP due to the ECU timing issue.
I gained a good bit of power over my original engine. Sorry about you missing out on the Del Sol...Good luck.

Thanks, I appreciate the information.
I'm keeping my eyes out for something now... I have the bug! If anyone lives near northeast PA and has a motor I may be interested in, let me know.
