Did some new mods and need some troubleshooting suggestions.

This past weekend I replaced my FPR, fuel rail, Intake manifold and installed a TB spacer.

The fuel rail leaked, the FPR leaked, The intake manifold needed some modification and the TB spacer needed another hole drilled and tapped.

I fixed all of that. Everything works great except for the fact that my idle is going nuts. My car is idling from 1000 to 1500 back and forth, back and forth. When I took the idle control valve off I sprayed carb cleaner in it and the O- rings looked good so I replaced it. But, I think that it is the problem? It idles better when I put it in gear but still a little high. Any suggestions?

It did this every once in a while on my old IM. The only thing I can think to do is to get some silicone and make sure it is sealed well...no air leaks?
If this doesn't work, I have access to another one for a replacement.

If that doesn't help, I would say you have a vacuum leak

i would spray some intake cleaner around some of the hoses and the intake manifold gasket to see if the motor does surage, the motor has to be running, if it does, there is your leak! also check the idle adjustment screw

My car did that, and I needed an IACV. You said it did it before now and then. Maybe it was only kind of broken, and now it's actually broken from when you installed the new mods?

Otherwise I can only think of a vacuum leak. I used some Sea Foam on my car and when I hooked the vacuum line back up, it still did it a bit because it wasn't on and tight enough.

I'm gonna second the vaccum leak, only because I had the same problem, check your hoses, if you used any chemicals like seafoam, sometimes it makes the connections a lil slippery.

Thanks for the replys. I did'nt get a chance to work on it much this weekend. I was too busy buying a new vehicle for my wife.

I did however reduce the fuel pressure. That seemed to help a little...I went form 32psi down to 25psi. I put on a new IM gasket last weekend, there was a leak with the cheap gasket that came with the new IM. I am going to switch out the IACV and seal it just in case the mounting face is not completely flush. I replaced all the vacuum hoses with new ones.

On the good side, there is a pretty descent performance gain!!!

I made sure all the IM nuts were tight, put gasket maker around the IACV and the IAT sensor, clamped down all the vacuum hoses and still the crazy idling. I did eliminate some slight leaks. Next chance I get I'm going with Todd's idea to spray carb cleaner around all possible leak points to check for an engine surge.

-The idle screw is not changing anything but the idle RPM's.
-Clamping various vacuum hoses does not really change anything.
-When I turn on the A/C, the idle stabilizes but runs higher than usual.

i had a thread about this problem a while back, which i still have.
we are in the exact same boat right now.

besides your crazy idle, do your rpm's freak out when you're driving above 3500 rpms too?

No, it only idles crazy when in park or neutral. It runs fine otherwise. If I cannot find a vacuum leak, I will start replacing sensors...and if that doesn't work I will seal up every possible leak point with gasket maker.

Does anyone know what the stock fuel pressure is on a D16?

The carb cleaner idea worked like a charm!!!!

I found that I have a leak around the #4 cylinder between the IM and the head and on either side of the TB spacer. They all have gaskets but are not sealing completely, and I have them on really tight! Tomorrow I will disassemble everything and put gasket maker on either side of all gaskets. BTW instead of the engine surging, it bogged down. No matter...it still worked. I will post back and let everyone know how it goes.

---Everyone should try this leak test just to be sure.---

Todd (hcarcrx) thanks again brother!!!!

I sealed up all the leaks this moring. I put gasket maker on both sides of the IM gasket and both sides of the TB spacer gaskets. Now it runs great. It idles better than it ever has before. Completely took care of the problem. Very happy.

Good job on finding the leak. My guess was that it was the tb spacer. Now that it runs right, did you try out your parts to see if they add any power?
