New fuel tank
RIO got a new fuel tank tonight.
I had a mysterious fuel starvation problem that's been coming and going since my dyno with Jeff. I basically narrowed it down to my 16 year old tank having rust in it. Main reasons for looking at the tank were.....
- Off the road for 9 years
- Rusty fuel in the fuel filter
- Brand new Walbro fuel pump making nasty noises when tank was 1/4 full
- Finally when the tank is 1/4 full I sometimes lost power while accelerating at 3/4 or more throttle. The car would just fall on it's face due to fuel starvation.
This is really my own fault, if you guys have seen my build album you'll know how bad my tank looked. I basically pulled it out, put a new Walbro pump in it and sandblasted it. Meanwhile, I should have just replaced it.
So tonight I decided to pull it back out (pain in the ass) and while I had it out I tossed in another brand new Walbro pump (upgraded to a 255lbs for good measure) and I also replaced my fuel filter.
If anyone needs to know how to take their tank out I'm a pro now

Fuel tank takes about 30 minutes out / 30 minutes in. I don't believe there is a specific fuse for just the fuel pump on a CRX. I'm not sure because I didn't need to pull any fuses for this job.

Any pics of the install? Did the original tank look like crap after being pulled, even though you sand blasted?

No pics of install. I was too tired and I was "driven" to get it done quick. The tank looked perfect since I sandblasted it and re-undercoated it. The problem was obviously on the inside
The biggest problem was the 6 - 10mm nuts that hold the fuel pump asm. in place. They were stripped and my #1 & #2 weapons of choice couldn't be used because it was the fuel tank. Usually to deal with these stubborn bishes I was my trusty friend the MAP torch which was an obvious NO. My 2nd choice is my air powered cut off wheel, again I was too afraid of sparks. I had to resort to a manual "nut splitter" (come on Kevlar let's hear it).
Other than that I'm just hunting down rattles and double checking everything. I also installed my new stereo, I have 1000 miles on it since the swap and she's running great.
