Tranny bearing free play
#14......is that bearing suppose to move at all? It slides on the shaft up and down about a quarter inch. The bearing next to it doesn't move at all. I tore out my tranny b/c I thought my input shaft bearing was bad b/c it would make a mild knocking sound when the clutch was released in neutral. Also, it would make a sound similar to metal balls smacking into each other when slowly moving and then pushing in the clucth to coast to a stop or into a parking lot (or any small maneuver). When I cracked it open the input shaft bearing looked fine (going to replace it anyway) but I couldn't visually see anything else wrong. All the gears look good, but one of these bearings has to be bad, and I think that may be the culprit.
I noticed in the manual that it's different the others and pics would help a lot. It does have some play though and on my D series tranny that bearing has no play at all.

#17 also has a ton of play. I'm pretty sure that one isn't suppose to have any play, right? I wouldn't have a problem replacing that one, it just slides on and off the shaft. It's the countershaft that I don't want to mess around b/c I don't have a bearing puller. Even though I wouldn't mind an excuse to get some new tools
Any help/suggestion would be appreciated. I have the 98 service manual so don't ask

#14 is a bearing that has a cover on it. The bearing itself is not suppose to move, but the outer covering can move up and down a little. So that bearing is find. Which is great news b/c I REALLY don't want to disassemble the countershaft.
#17 is definitely bad. That is like any other bearing and is not suppose to have any play at all.
So, I bought a new input shaft bearing becaus that is the common bearing to go, but it seemed fine when I cracked it open. I'm still replacing it anyway, because the #17 is at the opposite end of the shaft so I'm sure it put some kind of premature wear on that bearing. Now I just need to go to Acura tomorrow and get a new bearing and slide it on and then reinstall the tranny
I'm excited! In the last couple days I've cleared up a few rattles, made some rubber sleaves for my hood pins to stop them from rattling, replaced the driver side cam seals, new valve cover gasket, and in the process of fixing the tranny. I can't wait to get it back on the road with no CURRENT issues.
The list of things to do is still long though ........and growing

Well, if it's sittting there on your garage floor I would say definitely go for it. If it's in the car, then I might say just wait until you swap. Unless you are not sure how soon that would be. If the bearing goes it could get ugly.

Update on bearing #17:
Picked one up today at the dealer. The brand new one still had some play in it, but not as much as the old one. So I assume this is normal for this bearing. So all in all, I replaced all the bearings on the mainshaft. Transmission is back in the car and I"M waiting til tomorrow to get some tranny fluid so I can take it off the stands.
It's rough doing this crap on your own. An extra set of hands would have been awesome. If anyone needs any help i'm more than willing to help.

I actually took it out Saturday, which was easier than I thought. Yesterday I discovered my bearing woes. And today, which is when I could have used some hands, I did all the work on the tranny and installed it. Installing it stinks. Thanks for the offer though! I will seriously keep it in mind for the next time (hopefully not anytime soon!). I still want that shorter final drive Just have to finish up everything else though.

You wouldn't be able to get the name of that #17 bearing would you? Cause i'm really thinking about replacing the same bearings as you in my D16. It's got the classic noise in neutral with the clutch out. I'm trying to put some money into my rex now that i have it.

I'm gonna get the input shaft bearing monday and that other one if you can tell me the name. Gonna fill up the tranny with royal purple mtf too. I think the fluid that's in there has been there for a couple years.

The name of the other bearing is the "other mainshaft bearing." It's at the end of the mainshaft. I don't have the part number but you can find it here.... www.slhondaparts.com .
Good luck with the project! If you don't have to replace them then I would delay it as long as possible. If you are going to swap.........then just wait . Buy some new bearings for your new tranny.
