Most likely running slightly rich. This with the fact that it's a mid-engine car with probably no cats and a free flowing exhaust is what did it.
Looks cool doesn't it

really? cuz...i have a 94 dx hatch and a straight flow exhaust...so...by theory....if i were to 'accidentally' run rich... i could 'theoretically' 'throw flames' ? granted the pipe isn't too long?

It's harder then you think. The mid-engine car has about 70% less exhaust piping then your car so if there is a flame it doesn't have to travel that far before it exits the vehicle and is seen. Many cars throw flames, it's just they are not seen because they are buried in the exhaust somewhere.

yep. If you've heard a car backfire (mine has done it a few times) there was a flame somewhere, just not long enough to come out the exhaust.
YouTube - Turbo Lexus sc300 -launch was 2 step, rest was just running rich.

so...you just have to run rich? would a smaller diameter pipe help carry the flame to the end of the pipe?

I have poped a few flames from the crx a few times..but it was only wen I was using the 2-step..and when my ecu was chipped..added fuel florm 4000rpm below because it was runing a lil lean down low..soo it makes the car run rich when the 2 step is on..soo it pops a few flames

you can turn that feature on your turbo if you have one if you're running on motec or microtech
there something called 'fire dragger' here i dun know if you have it over there.. quite an old product... teenagers play with it here, the system has a spark plug hooked at the mouth of your exhaust and evrytime you shifts it throws flames there's another one called 'fire-star' which is pretty similar but i heard that one fucks up ur engine...
or you can not run a muffler and have the exhaust the piping come out at the side of your car where your front doors are from your exhaust manifold without any cat or center box... rev till 5k rpm, realease the throttle and tap on ur accelerator as the revs come down slowly... it'll go POP!
but the things with this is when u're the driver, you dun get to see the flames.. u just get to hear it

oh crap! that's awesome! like, i have an 83 supra, and it backfires like MAD hell when you nail the accellerator and then back off it quickly...so if i shorten the pipe (doesn't have any cat or muff) theoretically it should toss out some flames?
