Steering play

What would cause the steering to be really vague and be hard to keep the car going straight. Could it be the bushings on the tie rods are worn? Could it be anything else?

could be ANY of the steering bushings......could also be ur alignment being outta whack (since ur having trouble keepin it straight).

if u got an old car (not sure how old ur car is), then its quite likely to be a bit of both. check ur bushings. and check ur wheel alignments.
when u say steering 'play' that usually means there's a certain 'looseness' with limited response to the wheels at steer.

Yeah, going straight down a road with the steering wheel straight up, it seems to have about an inch of rotation before the motion get to the wheels. I can almost jiggle the steering wheel between the 1 in. left of center and 1 in. right of center and it won't do a damn thing to where the car is going.

So................. soggy bushings you say, hmmm?

worn bushings/aged bushings. get it all checked out and either go solid or heavy duty polyurethane if ur referring to that kind of 'play'

however depending on a road.....i mean hell if its a flat damn road and no inclination for the car to veer in any direction it should be pretty straight. a good test is driving straight and then brake test it. see which way ur car is pulling. that would be an alignment problem. u should get that checked out as well just for safe keeping.

Check the rubber mounts at the rack, sometimes they wear out when this happens they will fall out and the rack will actualy move back and forth in the mounting brackets quite a bit, can be very dangerous!
