Overheating
Hey guys I'm new here. Well, I've had an overheating problem for about a month now (on and off) temporarily fixing it different ways thinking those things would work. Last week I switched out the overflow bottle because I noticed the cap wasnt screwing down right causing air to go in and out. So I took my dad's from his VX and it screwed down nice and tight. Things were going GREAT until yesterday. Yesterday morning it was a bit cool out and I started my car and the RPMs were jumping from 1000 to 1500 until I got to work (I work only 3 miles away) and when I was about to pull into work I noticed the car was overheating. What could it be?? I also replaced the radiator cap, the fan works, almost 100% sure the thermostat works, replaced the top hose because the old one was bloated...any ideas??? The overflow was half full last week and this week it was a little over the full line.
*waiting to hear the horrible news*

How many miles on the car?
Any mods?
Why do you think the thermostat is good?
My bet is a bad thermostat. The overflow bottle will have nothing to do with you overheating.
Has the car been driving OK?

does your idle speed usually jump around? you might have some IACV or other idle issues too.

147,000 miles. I guess I really dont know if the thermostat is good or not. But what would cause the overflow bottle to go from half full to fill up over the "full" mark? The car drives just fine. No smoke or anything. Coolant is green...other then that, I have no idea what else the problem could be. As for mods, I just have short ram intake and exhaust and an upgraded alternator.
It overheated again tonight but the RPMs weren't jumping like before. You dont think it's a bad headgasket then?

No, this was only the 2nd time ever the RPMs jumped. The other time it was a while ago.

I would say thermostat, the reason your overflow tank is over filling is because when it over heats the pressure surpasses what the cap is rated for and coolant is released into the overflow. I was going to say start with your cap but you said you already replaced it

Thermostat is most likely gonna be your problem.
'stangs description of what the overflow bottle does is correct.

Hey thanks guys, I'll get it in and see if the problem goes away. People from other forums kept telling me it was the head gasket was going bad causing coolant to go into the overflow...so I'm glad I dont have to deal with that.

if your oil looks like a milkshake then it is most likey your head gasket, but don't sweat it if it is, they are easy on d series

i think my oil looks normal last time i checked the dip stick (a few days ago). i'm more of the electrical type, not mechanical but hopefully the thermostat fixes my problem and i can go back to riding around w/o a bottle of coolant and a funnel in my back seat

Cool thanks man. I think it's only 2 bolts to get to. What was with the "bewbies" thing earlier? This forum has instant messaging???
Oh, I fixed my RFI!! After 1 1/2 years of dealing with it all I had to do was ground the HU. The ground was hooked up to this noise cancalation device (which sucked) and I just grounded it to the car. But now that the "whine" is gone I can now hear everything else that is wrong with my car, haha.

check the color of the coolant.... also grab both hoses and see if one if oddly colder than the other one. also your radiator core could be clogged up or your heater core is clogged check all those things. and welcome aboard

Coolant color seems normal. Radiator core meaning the radiator itself has a clog in it? I'll check the hoses tomorrow. I'm pretty sure the lower one is cooler then the upper one.

radiator core = radiator itself
heater core = mini radiator that is inside the car. look for 2 rubber hoses going through the firewall, connected to the block - probably 6 or so inches apart.
