My civic caught fire-dramatic experience

Warning *long read* Its your option to read it or not.

Well this paste summer I lent my jack stands to a friend who never gave it back and eventually since he didnt give it back just paid me for them

About a lil more then a month ago I went to J & D Auto Service to fix the leak he replaced: the camshaft seal, crankshaft seal, valve cover gasket. Also he offered to give me a oil change and replace my timing belt which I agreed to.
This was done 1/6/2006

Recently its been leaking oil again. I also went crawled under the car litterally cuz i didnt have stands to put it up on and saw the leak. The leak was coming from the crank shaft seal and dripping down the side of the oil pan (and since its not level) slide down the bottom of the oil pan and then dripp to the floor.
Heres where it was leaking

from the seal their

The mechanic gives a 12k or 1 year warrenty on all his work so I brought it back today. Told him to put it up on a lift and show'd him where its leaking oil. He said its probually a loose bolt and I watched as he searched for the bolt in which he tightened.

he wipes everything off i look for it too leak (since its up on the lift) and it seems to stop.

He lowers to car off the lift pops the hood. And mentions that theirs also oil leaking from my valve cover. I say I know about that I broke 3 of the bolts by over tightening them (after i tried painting the valve cover) and I have replacement bolts in the cup holder.
Their are 5 bolts holding down the valve cover in total.
Ive driven about 3 weeks with no problem that way looking or waiting to get replacement bolts.

he is like okay how are you going to take them out after taking the valve cover off pointing out its not so easy .im like easy "I have a screw extracter drill bit for my drill"
He says okay and I start driving home forgetting the origonal recipt that says about the warrenty with him

At a few intersections I thought i smelled fire. Then I saw smoke and lots of it. I turned around went back with my head out the window cuz smoke was coming into the cabin. brought it to the shop it was leaking oil pretty bad and oil was buring from when it touch the headers. But also their was a minor oil FIRE too. He took a fire extingisher and put out the fire. The oil dripping was still smoking

Turns out that on the way back oil was pouring out from the valve cover and causing the other events. He says he doesnt have that drill extractor bit for his drill so he takes a sharp pin thing and trys to unscrew the bottoms of the broken bolts off. Eventually (after like an hour) he gets all 3 off. he tries putting them all back but the thread the bolts screw into was stripped so he fixed that and put it all back. Then he power washed my engine bay told me to leave it open for 5 min to burn up the remaining oil.

THOUGH HE DID tighten the bolts when he put the valve cover back on. For some reason it made all these problems occur. Im really shaken up.

Good thing is everything was free from the mechanic.
My interior smells like burning oil still and a lil bit of smoke comes outa the hood when i drive but not much

the mechanic didn't do anything wrong? Or am i missing something?

But yeah, valve cover bolts are tightened to like 4 ft lbs or something, basically just snug them.

Yep he didnt do anything wrong. Only thing that could be considered his wrong doing is noticing that a few valve cover bolts are broken and stull loosing up the remeaining unbroken bolts to see "how hard it is to remove the broken pieces" from the broken bolts. By doing that he broke the seal create. Even if not all the bolts were on their was a seal that was created so none of the oil splirted everywhere. By taking the cover off he broke that seal and maybe even didnt put the valve cover perfectly flat back on cuz I only had 2 bolts holding it down on 1 side.

wow. glad everythings safe now.

I had a small fire in my engine bay also one time. I was changing out my fuel injectors and didn't disconnect the battery.....I realized it when I had my fuel rail out and disconnected it like a dumbass. Basically there was a spark and a shop rag caught on fire.

I threw it on the ground and put it out....not biggie but I sure did feel like a dumbass.

Moral of the story: don't drink too much and work on your car
