Tim's FG project on his CRX
well i came to conclusions that my huge sub box was weighing down my ass end of my car waaaaay too much...and every time i corner, the fender lip would start to rub on the tire.
so i took out the box....shit was heavy.
the next day (today)
well....i have started it.... and i had trouble from the start lolol
went and grabbed water and soap and cleaned it all up good.
when i started to lay down the masking tape..it would not stick at all. ( i was using the painters masking tape, baaad mistake!)
so i went out and i bought the really really good stuff. 3m automotive masking tape! it works GREAT!
i started laying down my tape, turns out i couldnt go fast cause now my bad back memories were starting to catch up to me. my lower back is hell now.
but i layed the tape down, grabbed my spray adhesive and sprayed it down good, grabbed the foil and went to town. here's some progress pics so far. hopefully tonight i can lay down a layer of FG.
layed down the tape
then sprayed it with adhesive and then layed down some foil with my roller
thats all for now...my back is seriously in agony...i can not slouch over
i'll try and lay down a layer of FG tonight and then let it dry over night.
Q is....do i lay down wax as a mold release agent....or go lazy and just lay the FG right away...

k well today i went and bought the wax for the mold release..
layed it all down.....got her nice and lubed up lol
got geared up and messured out my resin to 8oz, and hardener. layed on my first batch of fiberglass..
well i can honestly tell you that it was a failure cause with in minutes the mix started to harden and gel up really good. the fiberglass was shit too so i started over.
i quickly through it out and i went and made up another batch, this time at 16oz. and put a lil bit less hardener in...well it was fine...but it still gelled up really fast but now as fast as the first...
so then i garbaged that!
went and quickly made up a 3rd batch. and put a lot less hardener in, and this time i got it all layed down after 3 (well 2 per say) attempts.
let me tell you....for a first experience with FG, its TRICKY,
first of all its hard to work with cause you have to work fast and its sticky too and you have to work the fibers just ever so slightly
though...i think i know what i did wrong. when i was doing the glassing, i would tear up one or two pieces of glass, and wet it down. then decide no...this isnt the way to do it...then i started to soak it a little. went back and forth between soaking and wetting.
then i tried a little trick with brushing on the resin on the mold to help the fiberglass stick and then stipple it.
and the other downfall is this stuff is THIN matting. so what i wanna try and do is before i take out the mold..i wanna try and do another layer of FG over top to make sure this will cover all the area's of the mold.
it was hard to see what was covered and what was not cause the matting was so thin!
anyways. here's the pics of my glassing progress.

UPDATE:
so i go over to my buddies place, and what i thought i was gonna lay down another layer of fiberglass...we just decided to pull it out of the car...
so here we are the both of us, trying to pull this out of the car.....uh huh....it aint budging.
why?????????
well apparently it was cause of the little dip on the bottom!! it was INSANE to get this thing out...if i had of layed more layers down, it would of been impossible to get out..
so nearly 30 mins pass by, and you have to remember...i put tape down....tinfoil AND wax for a mold release and it still wasnt budging!
so finally it pops out...it had a few cracks in it, but thats ok. it actually came out great
well my friend knows lots of bout fiberglassing and such so we mixed up at batch of resin, and pooled it into the bottom corner and painted it all around the enclosure.
thats as far as i got to, tomorrow night will be adding in a layer of matting, then i have to fab up the MDF, and rings, what we're gonna do is we're gonna add like 3 more layers of matting, then use kitty hair on her.
hope you enjoy...thanx for looking this far

This is a very cool thread. FG is one thing I have never been able to do and I had no idea how to make a perfect mold in the car. I never thought of using masking tape and applying the FG right to the surface, Very awesome!! can't wait to see the finished product.

there's more than just laying down tape...but lots of people said you can just lay down tape then FG right over top that.
well....yes and no..
what i did was tape, then layed down the tinfoil ontop of the tape with spray adhesive then i applied turtle wax to the mold so that it'll pop right out with no complications..
or so i thought...
well it WOULD of popped right out except that it was literally jammed into the corner with all the curves and dips and stuff.
so it took us 30mins to pop the mold out.

thanx bud!! i cant wait till its done.
i layed down another layer of fiberglass last night. fixed up the corner a lil bit too.
i wasnt very pleased with the 2nd laying of the glass, there was tons of air pockets in it...plus i ran out of resin too so i did miss a few spots.
thats ok... cause tonight i'll be laying down some kitty hair, short strand by evercoat.
once that dries i'll sand it all down, then i'll cut my subwoofer rings then get ready to start mounting the ring to the enclosure...
i'm also doing one thing at a time too, and i know for next time what to do for the other corner when i start to glass it.

Project looks very cool. I've read a lot about fiberglass but never messed around with it. I might... nevermind, not even going to talk about it because it'll never happen. :P

I just repaired my fg bumper this weekend, and it really was a nightmare. I need to do a bunch of sanding to make it right, but I'm off to a good start. Your box is starting to look pretty impressive, though. As much as I'm against sound systems, you're definitely pulling it off in a classy way.

thanx you guys!! wow. this is so awesome!! ahahah
last night i added another layer of kitty hair to the voids in the enclosure.
today i have to trim the enclosure, get out the router and start makeing my rings for the sub, mount the rings (hopefully it'll stick to the kitty hair) stretch the polyester. and hopefully once thats done...go to town on another 6 or 7 layers of fiberglass.
cover it with rage gold and start sanding it down like a mofo.
