Brakes help - *tap*/*clunk* in reverse
Ok I need some brake expertise - My brakes are making a tap/clunk noise when I stop in reverse. It makes the noise once each time the pedal is applied. I'm trying to diagnose & fix this before my autoX on Sunday....read on...
When I autocrossed in June my front right brakes were making a rubbing noise - like something was on there rubbing; the frequency of the noise would speed up and slow down with the speed of the wheel. It started when the brakes were hot, after a run, then stopped as they cooled/sat.
Now I just had the wheel off, inspecting everything. The only thing I noticed was the little nipple cap thing was cracked and in bad shape. but pads, rotors, calipers, lines all looked ok. Wheel hub was a little rusty but it couldn't be from brake fluid because it was clean everywhere else.
Then I was just out driving and everything's all good going forward. But when backing up at ~5mph then applying the brakes they would make contact and then a split second later a "Tap" noise. It was kind of a tap, almost a light clunk. Car still stopped fine, just a noise. No change in brake feel.
Any ideas?

thanks guys...
I'm 99% sure it's coming from the front right. I mean I can distinctly hear it from up there. So I don't think the shoes are the problem.
CV joint / half-shaft is a possibility with the car at 120k miles.
Bearings...I wouldn't even know how to test for that.
It's also weird that it's only in reverse but that suggests there's play somewhere that is in tension going forward, but *clunks* when the caliper clamps the disc as it attempts to go the other way.
I'm going to get back under there and jiggle and bang some stuff. If you think of anything else I'm all ears & reps.

I would dare say its just the pads bouncing in the clips that hold them i wouldnt think its anything very serious though.

I like that suggestion, nice and simple, not too serious
We'll see...I'm going to check it out in a few minutes here

Ok so I drove the car to recreate the problem, and now there is no noise
Then I took a good look at the brakes, tried to find some loose parts or something. The only things wrong that I can see are this little nub is cracked and might fall off

And this plate (marked with the X) slides up and down ever so slightly - about as much as indicated by the gap beteween the two red lines
So I think everything is fine now. I guess I'll find out when I auto-X tomorrow

Thats where the noise is coming from the shim plate for the pads is loose. Easy fix go to your local parts store and buy some aerisol spray thats used on the pads for anti squeel apply it to the shim plate light it with a lighter for just a second blow it out and reinstall the pads and caliper it will glue itself to the caliper and there wont be anymore noise, and it will still come off when new pads are needed. This is how ive always done my brakes never any noise or squeeling.

Wow...it barely moved at all...hopefully this isn't that big a deal. I'll leave it as is for tomorrow and see what happens.
then maybe I'll look at fixing it in place like you mentioned. Thanks

Cool. I'll replace it when I put SS lines on. For now it's hanging on surprisingly well!

Scott- when you are autocrossing and on the track in general, do you find that you go through brake pads pretty quickly?
