Not at all. I've only ever used OEM or OEM replacement pads which are pretty high endurance pads. Of course they don't stop as well but they last forever. Before I went to willow springs I was going to replace them but they were at about half life so I left them on, did the track day, and I think they went another 6 months still before I had to replace them. These pads I have on now I check before every autoX and they're holding up great. There are no signs of accelerated wear. AutoX is so short...four 40-50second runs...it's not all that much of a beating. I will tell you that I notice IMPROVED braking after an autoX because it tends to melt off the glazing that can result from street driving and sort of re-bed the pads.
So you could say that AutoX is a form of brake maintenance

On this topic I still get the tap/clunk but it has not worsened or shown any signs of serious damage. I'm stumped.

it could be your calipers slamming against the support, control arm bushings, strut mount, or sway bar mounts / end links. some cars have shims to stop that noise, but idk if civics do.

btw, did you do a SERIOUS cleaning job on your brakes? get everything moving smoothly and that might either lessen the effect or stop it all together.

Thanks for the tip I'll look into a thorough cleaning just for good measure. The weird thing about this noise though is that it happens shortly after the brakes are engaged only while the car is moving backwards. LIke I said at first it almost sounds like there's slack between the axle and hub; that the brakes are able to stop the hub momentarily with the car moving backwards while the slack is taken out of the normally forward-moving assembly ... and the clunk would be the axle locking on the hub again and getting it moving again. stizumped

I'm 99% sure it's coming from the front right. I mean I can distinctly hear it from up there. So I don't think the shoes are the problem.
CV joint / half-shaft is a possibility with the car at 120k miles.
Bearings...I wouldn't even know how to test for that.

It's also weird that it's only in reverse but that suggests there's play somewhere that is in tension going forward, but *clunks* when the caliper clamps the disc as it attempts to go the other way.

I'm going to get back under there and jiggle and bang some stuff. If you think of anything else I'm all ears & reps.

Simple way to your local parts store, buy some aerisol spray thats pad for anti-squeel it only the second time for a fight, and re-install the pads and calipers light plate light rubber gasket itself caliper and habits the noise.
