lets have some fun
So Protech released their turbo kit and now they are asking for 2k down for a pre order on the kit and the kit as a whole costs 3k. This is their site and this is the shit that the kit comes with.
http://ptp.tuningmotorsports.com/pro...cat=422&page=1
# 304SS 3 inch Downpipe
# Heat Wrap
# Battery Box
heres the car and driver link
http://www.caranddriver.com/specialt...x-8-turbo.html
so is it just me or is the kit a little to much especially since your not getting engine management with it. So I thought for fun we can all try to build a similar or better kit for less money. GOOOOO!
Rickys Peiced together set up
1. Rx8 Turbo manifold $650 custom fabricated
2. Tial wastegate $190
3. K and N filter $50
4. HKS SSQ BOV $75 w/ flange via ebay what a deal
5. Oil lines $80
6. Intercooler $136
7. Piping Couplers and t bolt clamps $175
8. GT35R $1295
Total = $2651

5000 for a turbo kit is way too much. you could piece it for nearly half the price, and build on it at the same time

yikes 5k does sound a lot for that shit. and NO form of engine management or even a FMU. and they don't quite tell you what turbo it is.

in all honesty... i'm not familiar w/ rotaries. the only thing i know is that they usually produce and maintain a lot higher EGTs which actually is more beneficial for spooling larger turbos. a friend of mine w/ an rx7 was telling me once that T66's, t67's and T76's were considered "street" turbos on those cars lol.

thats fd, and that was seriously over exagerated. the problems with the fd rx7 werent because of the apex seals the real problem lied in the amount of heat that the engine was putting out. The new renesis rotarys have been proven to be quite reliable. though it makes you wonder if the same issues will manifest if you drop a turbo into the renisis. another reason that people bitch about the fds is because they didnt maintain them properly. Those cars need alot of maintenance. I live in florida which is very rotary freindly and my uncle had a fd rx7 and he made it to 150k miles on it with out ever rebuilding.
The problem is that the rx8 isnt a forgiving engine so you really need to maintain it. I think the scheduled oil changes were every 1300 miles.

Serious exaggerated??? I worked at a Mazda dealer in parts. In 1995, RX-7 after RX-7 were coming in for Apex seals. Here's the messed up thing though. We would get cars with 4K miles on them with bad seals then right after that we would see a RX-7 with 150K+ miles on it come in for oil changes that never had one issue. Crazy, it seems if you got a good RX-7 was just based purely on luck. I have no doubts this new engine is much better, but I'm still leery. I still believe the Rotary engine is the technology king. I mean 9 moving parts in the whole 2 rotor engine!!! I just think we still have a ways to go before it's perfected and the Apex seals are the achilles heal.

were the ones with 4k miles on it younger guys? because I think it may have been a maintenance issue. all the rotory guys ive been around have told me that those engines are finicky if you pamper them they will treat you right but the moment you dont start showing it love it will bite you in the ass. the mod ive seen that has made the rx7s live the longest is the down pipe because it supposedly decreases the temperatures because the oem one was ot restrictive or something like that. Ill look for a write up from one of the rx7 forums. there are also some reliability mods you need to do to the fds

there ya go and heres one with a little more info
http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=27802
like I said the problem with rotaries is heat. they generate alot of heat and thats what ends up killing those engines. even with the new rx8 they suggest that you replace the radiator as soon as you get the car. once you have your cooling issues out of the way the car will last a long time
