Can I ....... should I wax my carbon fiber hood??
I'm getting ready to put my first coat of wax on RIO since her bodywork. I'm literally in the garage right now, and I'm thinking ....oh damn! what do I do about my carbon hood? Do I wax it, or just leave it alone??
Anyone know the truth about carbon fiber care??

im not positive, but im sure youd wash and wax it like any other hood. they usually use the same clearcoat as they do when a panel is painted, no?

i never really thought about it either. I'd assume since it's clear coated you'd just wax it...

I don't think it's the same type of clear coat that a normal paint job is done with. I think it's more of like an acrylic resin coating.
Anyway.... I waxed it and it looks incredible!! The weave really jumps out at you now. Actually, the whole car looks completely different. I didn't think it was actually possible for the paint to get any brighter....but it did!!

even though you did it already, id say in the future, keep waxxing it. ive seen so many cars with faded paint but the CF hood is always the most faded part. i think they tend to fade very quickly, so i know if i had one, id make sure it was waxed all over very often. it can only help anyway.

i got a used vented CF hood.. the condition is pretty bad.. it's was sitting under the sun for too long before an all the wax came off.. now it looks like it's mouldy.. is there any revitalisation process i do to it.. from a certain distance it looks like it's growing fungus..

i think you can get them refinnished, although im going to bet its more cost efficient to get a new one. you could try sanding it down, and giving it a few coats of clear. the worst that can happen is it will look a little better than now minuss the fungi

oh yea.. the actual hood is also warped from all that sun so it dun really close properly on the front.. by refinnishing can they un-warp it too? i dun mind spending money to refinnish it.. it won't cost more than a brand new one over here...

it only fades with poor/cheap resin. its the same resin that u notice some CF hoods 'yellow' over time (and im not talkin about the coloured CF bonnets...thats totally different). but its the same resin that holds the weave together in its structural pattern. it largely contributes to the CF's attributes. actually quite more so than the carbon fibre twill itself.
good resin shouldnt warp or yellow over time. also helps in structural rigidity
u clearcoat the top usually after the CF is made. so wax helps anyways. but it wont stop the resin from yellowing since its still exposed to UV.

yea.. the clear coat is fading and all.. i think it's warping coz it's too thin and there isn't any stucture holding up the shape at the bottom.. i wanna put a proper structure at the bottom but i was advised against it as it will add weight to it

the weight would be negligible. do u have a fibreglass subframe already on it?
