System of your engine and how to upgrade them.

Firgured we should start a tread to collect information about:

A. The various systems that are at work in your engine
B. How to upgrade those systems to get more power out of them.

I'll start with the basis I know

Breathing modifcations
These modifications work on your engines ability to intake air and to release exhaust gases, almost any car that has every been modified in its history has had one of these modifications done. These modificitions DO NOT technically add horsepower to your engine but rather relieve stress on your engine allowing you to free up horsepower.

Intake Modifications

There are various types of intake systems you can add to your car to free up some more horses and make you engine intake air easilier as well as intaking cooler air. I'll talk about some of the more popular ones first.

Cold Air Intakes
AKA CAI's these intakes place your filter OUTSIDE of your hot engine bay allowing you to draw cool air in thru the filter and into the throttle body.

Advantages:
--- Draw in cooler Air
--- Better then stock
--- Filter usualy larger therefor more air being drawn in
--- Smoother pipping so air is quicker to get to throttlebody

Disadvantages:
--- Piping does run throught the engine bay so the air does heat up
--- Longer piping then a Short ram intake

Short Ram intake
AKA SRI's these intakes place your filter in a cooler air of the engine bay while keeping it in the engine bay unlike a CAI, the pipping is shorter but it is placed in a hotter air then a CAI

Advantages:
--- Better then stock
--- Shorter pipping then a CAI
--- Filter usually larger therefor more air being draw in
--- Smoother pipping so air is quicker to get to TB
--- One can add a small hood scoop and get cool air in almsot like a CAI

Disadvantages:
--- Filter is in hot engine bay
