A compression test needs to be done without the car running. You disconnect all the plug wires and crank the car three times while a compression gauge is screwed into a cylinder. You take the measurement and then repeat the steps for all the other cylinders. These measurements are compared to each other and the norm for that engine. A leak down test is somewhat similar but more comprehensive.
