You need to do a compression test or better yet a leak down. With a leak down test we will be able to tell a ton of stuff.

do the plugs smell like fuel?

Are you getting spark? Remove a plug and reattach it to the cable. Crank the engine and see if it sparks while the engine is being turned over.
